Obituary for Natalie Perry Scott

Natalie Perry Scott
Natalie Perry Scott died at St. Andrew's Village in Boothbay Harbor on Sunday, January 20, 2013, after a long illness. She was the wife of Walter H. Scott, a long-time resident of Boothbay Harbor; they were married at St. Columba's in 1996, a second marriage for both, and lived in Sprucewold.
Natalie was born in Boston in 1929, the daughter of Phyllis Brownell and Frederick D. Burditt. Her father, a naval engineer, worked at BIW during World War II, and Nat attended elementary and junior high school in Bath. She graduated from Melrose (Mass.) High School in 1947 and worked in Boston for several years before her marriage to Robert (Bob) Perry in 1950. They moved to the New York area, where Bob began a career in the textile industry, and raised five children in Glen Rock and Ridgewood, N.J. In 1969 they moved to Wilton, Conn., where Natalie was active in the local historical society and garden club and served on the vestry of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. As a docent at the Wilton Historical Society, she received special recognition for the educational programs she organized in conjunction with the nation's bicentennial in 1976.
After her divorce in 1977 and 25 years as a full-time mother and homemaker, she launched herself into the 9-5 world, working first as a secretary at Marketing Corp. of America in Westport, Conn., and then, after moving to Portland in 1985, as the northern New England sales representative for Vera Bradley and other product lines. She thrived in her new life, developing a close circle of friends, taking classes at the Maine College of Art, and attending the Cathedral Church of St. Luke. In 1996, she married Scotty and began a new chapter with him in Boothbay.
Natalie had a great joie de vivre and was endlessly creative. An accomplished fine artist working primarily in watercolor and pastels, she also loved gardening, home decorating, reading, cooking, and genealogy. She hooked many beautiful rugs for her family which she designed herself and, with daughter Eliza, designed and built an elaborate dollhouse modeled on the Nickels-Sortwell House in Wiscasset. Most of all, she loved adventures: on their beloved Sea Star, Nat and Scotty sailed up and down the East Coast, including several voyages on the Intracoastal Waterway; when sailing became too much, they bought an RV and traveled across the country. In Boothbay she was active in the yacht club, the “Happy Hookers” rug hooking group, and the historical society.
Natalie is survived by a large family: her beloved husband Scotty; her sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Dick Reedy; her five children and their spouses, Andrew and Barbara Perry of Stuart, Florida, Susan and Paul Hutcheon of Newington, Conn., Jane Perry and James Rubin of Charlottesville, Va., Richard Perry of Boothbay Harbor, and Eliza Perry and Allen Merritt of Westbrook, Me.; her stepchildren Ellen, Martha, and Robb Scott; ten grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was a devoted and loving grandmother to Jason, Katherine, and Abigail Perry; Alex and Andrew Hutcheon; Edward Perry Rubin; Raymond and Colette Perry; and Amanda Stark Ujhelyi and Robert Stark.
The family wishes to recognize the extraordinary care Natalie received at Safe Haven and Gregory Wing at St. Andrew's Village. Thanks to the devoted caregivers and staff at St. Andrew's, Natalie may have lost her memory, but never her dignity.

Donations in Natalie’s memory can be sent to: The Gregory Wing Garden Fund, c/o SAH Development Office, PO Box 417, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538. A memorial service for Natalie will be held at
The Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor, 1 Eastern Avenue, Boothbay Harbor, Maine, on Saturday, May 25th, at 11 o'clock in the morning, with a reception to follow.
