Condolences

Condolence From: Melissa Warren
Condolence: Dr. Chapman taught me many things about compassion, caring, and interpersonal connection with patients. I was blessed to work with him in many different capacities in my time in Dubuque. Even as I carry my ministry to other parts of the state and different settings, Dr. Chapman's gentle words often spur me on to more informed and more compassionate interactions with my parishioners. My time with Dr. Chapman was most intensely shaped during my years with Hospice of Dubuque. He loved to teach me origins of words involved in medicine, and he and I would often share personal stories about how faith and spirituality were integral to the care we were providing as well as our personal lives.
Mary Jo and family, Dr. Chapman always spoke of all of you with such love and pride. His eyes would twinkle, his chuckle would deepen, and his accent would grow as he regaled me with story after story about his "amazing, wonderful family". My heart is sad to think of a world without Dr. Chapman in it, but I know that he would remind me that "eventually, Melissa, there is only so much medicine and the human body can do. That's where our faith steps in and takes over." God bless you all. My prayers are with you all. Godspeed Dr. Chapman.

Condolence: Dr. Chapman was my doctor for about 35 years. He was always
compassionate and accomplished. When I worked as a chaplain
at Mercy Hospital I'd see him visiting patients into the night
after a busy day in his office. He always had a smile and a
good word. He was much to be admired, as his obituary shows.

Condolence: Dear Mrs.Chapman and family. Please accept my condolences on the passing of Dr Chapman.I am one of the original EMTS that were mentioned in Dr.Chapmans obituary. And I can tell you that the EMS services of the Dubuque Fire Department are first rate because of the leadership of Dr. Chapman. Many lives have been saved and injuries lessened because of his influence .The most remarkable thing that I remember about him was the time he would take to teach or explain to me any question that I had.And the amount of respect that people had for him that when he wanted to go forward with something he would say I Think We Need To Do This and because it came from Dr John Chapman everybody was in agreement and it went forward. Dubuque is a better place thanks to John Chapman and he will be missed. Daryl Maroney

Condolence From: Roger and Theresa Neuhaus
Condolence: Dear Mary Jo and all of the Chapman clan -
Theresa and I were so saddend initially by the news of John's passing..., until we reflected a bit more and came to realize he would not want us to be. I can see his smile and hear his calming, steady voice as I gaze out my window at the mountain ranges that surround Tucson this morning. I can feel his presence in the fond memories we will always cherish. I can see him doing the chicken dance at the annual Finley shooting park event! If I had any degree of success in my work at Finley, surely it was in large part due to his guidance, mentoring and support. He was always there when things seemed to be the toughest and new just how to take the edge off of the moment in the most reassuring way. There will never be another one like him.
One instance i want to share with you that always makes me laugh has to do with a time when he was President of the Finley Foundation and I was charged with prepping and briefing him for meetings, public events and the like. On this particular day,he was scheduled to come by my office to review details for an event we were conducting that evening at the DG&CC to announce progress on the campaign for the Wendt Regioanl Cancer Center. When he arrived, i handed him a speech i had drafted for him so he would be sure to thank all of the right people, highlight some of the key benefits of the project to the community and introduce the person who would speak after him. As he sat and adjusted his glasses, reading every word silently, he looked up at me with a determined and focused glare, but said nothing. Breaking the silence, and fearing perhaps he did not like what i had written for him, I asked "What is it Dr. Chapman? would you like to do some revisions to what i've drafted?" He responded "My Lord,no, it's perfect son, You're Stephanopolus!" I said "What"? he says, that guy that makes Clinton look so good. We both laughed hard and when we could breath again, I told him i was flatterd with the compliment, but if i were Stephanopolus, then that would make him Clinton, and he was far to honest and ethical for that role, so we agreed to go forward into the event that night just as "The Finley guys". It was a smashing success and he carried the evening. Keep smiling, John, and thanks for everthing. Best to all of you Chapmans. May God Bless.

Condolence From:
Condolence: Dr. John's life influenced me and countless others who were fortunate enough to have known him. His legacy stands far above what most of us can accomplish in this life: the wonderful memories, charitable deeds and loving, supportive wife, children and grandchildren. His vibrancy and strength of character shine through each of their eyes,
I didn't spend much time with Dr.John, but always enjoyed time with him, Mary Jo, Dr.Beth and Carol.
Indeed, he has an amazing family!
Love, Patti Hanlon Kent and Family

Condolence: Dr. Chapman was our Dr. for a good many years before his retirement. He was always busy but when he was with a patient he gave them his full attention. He used to tell it like this, I have only one patient "The one I'm with. " God bless you all in your time of sorrow.

Condolence From: Phyllis Wubben
Condolence: Please accept my condolences on your loss. Dr. Chapman was an extraordinary man and doctor. He always treated me and my family with the utmost respect and compassion. He will be missed.
A short story that illustrates his caring nature: Three days before my daughter's wedding, she developed itchy spots. We came in after hours. After Dr. Chapman saw us initially, he sent Margie, his nurse, in to verify his diagnosis of chicken pox. He hadn't seen a case in nearly twenty years but he knew Margie's children had had it. He consulted with another doctor, got us a prescription for a new drug to stop the virus, and said we were safe to have the wedding without spreading the illness. My husband and aunt had recently been hospitalized, Dr. Chapman patted my back and told me he hoped I caught a break soon. That made all the difference.
You'll be in my prayers,
Phyllis Wubben

Condolence: The Chapman family:
But the souls of the righteous are in the HAND of GOD
And no torment will ever touch them.
In the eyes of the foolish, they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be disaster.
And their going from us to be their destruction.
But they are at peace!!
