Condolence From: Siri Gamage
Condolence: S.J.Tambiah was a towering figure in anthropology and also a role model for us during our undergraduate days at the University of Ceylon in late 60s and early 70s.His work inspired us as young graduates and lecturers subsequently. He employed a critical perspective to the subjects/topics under study making his work more appealing compared to conventional work.May he rest in peace!

Condolence: Tambiah was a scholar with a keen sense of justice, an incisive intellect, and a low tolerance for hypocrisy. We will rely on his research and analysis for years to come and will remember the teacher who showed us the path.

Condolence: Tambi was a giant in his field, a man of subtlety, wit, immense grace. He brought imagination and passion into the heart of the Anglophone anthropological establishment, and inspired generations of students -- above all, those of us from the Global South -- to have the courage to make the discipline our own. I and my students owe him an immense debt of gratitude, and offer our appreciation and sympathy to his family. It was truly a priviledge to have known him.

Condolence: Professor Tambiah inspired a generation of South Asian anthropologists and "South Asia-wallahs, such as me, over the years, with his insightful and approachable cultural studies and analyses. In grad school I phoned him a few times with questions of adaptation and culture change. He was always interested in my research in Nepal and how his own research results could be applied. I have always been grateful of the opportunity to learn from him. My condolences to his many friends, colleagues, students and family. You all know you lost a very special person. Robert Cardinalli
