Dear Leslie, Curtis and Derek
Your Father was like a brother to me. When we were in high school, he spent a lot of time at our place. My Mom would take him in whenever he needed to stay in town. She loved him like a son.
I remember a couple of incidents when your dad showed up at our house after walking the 7 miles from farm to town. He was told to get off the farm property, by his father, without understanding or explanation. He was estranged from his parents when your parents got married so my Mom (he called her Mum Lantz) was honoured to play Mother of the Groom. Ironically, this was the only chance she got as she died before Dean or I got married.
I remember your Dad, and my brother Dean and I had a vinegar-drinking contest in our basement. We often played board games or poker for chips, not money. Your dad was just in it for sheer pleasure of not having to worry about farm chores or anything for a while. He often tried to bend the rules so he would win, and laugh about it when his brother Jim or Dean caught him. He had a gift for telling stories and bringing out the funny things. They maybe weren’t really funny, but the way he told the story, we all laughed. The 3 boys (Ron, Jim and Dean) got along so well it was fun when they were all together. He was loved deeply by our family.
With Sympathy and love, Aunt Linda.
