Obituary for Myra Jo McBride-Knowlton

Smithfield, VA

Myra Jo McBride-Knowlton, 64, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2017. Born in Danville, VA, she was the daughter of the late Peggy Megerle Wheeler and Robert McBride, Jr. A resident of Hampton, since 1961, Myra had lived in Smithfield since 1988.

A social worker and volunteer resource coordinator for the city of Hampton, Myra was instrumental in the founding of Healthy Families Partnership. She was a local political activist and advocate for those marginalized. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Smithfield Chapter #127, and was a local and state advisor for the International Order of Rainbow for Girls.

Faced with health struggles for a number of years, Myra never lost her positive outlook and zest for life. She always placed everyone else鈥檚 well-being over her own. She gave of herself to a fault and the world is a better place for her being in it. No one could beat her in Trivial Pursuit and she was an avid Red Sox fan.

A beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend, Myra leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 36 years, Donald Knowlton; her daughter, Meghan Knowlton; son, Ryan Knowlton; sisters, Cathy (Dwight) Hunt, Trudy (Bob) Walsh, Tracy (Robert) Hudson; mother-in-law, Carolyn Knowlton; brother-in-law, Douglas (Donna) Knowlton, nieces and nephews, Graham and Todd Hunt, Adam, Sam, and Elizabeth Walsh, Wheeler and Hanna-Lynn Hudson, David (Jennie) Knowlton, Sarah (Anthony) Roberts, and grandniece, Elizabeth Knowlton; grand-puppies, Chester and Dap; and a host of extended family and friends.

Family and friends will gather 7-8:30 pm, Friday, January 20, 2017 for visitation at Colonial Funeral Home, Carrollton. A service celebrating Myra鈥檚 life will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, January 21, at Hampton Baptist Church, 40 King's Way, Hampton, with Rev. Rachel Sciretti officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church social hall. Burial will be private.
