Life Story for Leonora S. Haack (Sobin)

Leonora S. Haack (Sobin)
Leonora S. Haack, of Westfield, NJ, passed away on March 9, 2017. Lee, as she was known in the local community, is survived her husband, Robert, and three children: Kirsten, Jonathan and Lara.

Lee grew up in working class family in Queens, NY and pursued her love for life sciences in a time when social conventions often limited a woman’s educational pursuits beyond high school. Her sharp intellect and determination helped her earn a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from City College in New York, and later a Master’s in Microbiology as one of the first women accepted to the program at Wesleyan University. Lee went on to work for the Department of Public Health after returning to New York City, where she met a Robert through mutual friends. Their relationship grew and they married in 1970. Lee began her life as a devoted mother and pillar of the Westfield community.

Lee, also known as “goddess” to her family and close friends, had a deep love and caring for people. Her passion for investing in children’s education and futures led her to be actively involved in the Washington Rock Girl Scouts and a volunteer at the Westfield High School career center. She was often referred to as a ‘second mom’ by her children’s friends for her tireless support, whether in the crowds at a sports event or in the career center helping navigate the rapids of college and career choices. With a quick smile that lit up the room, infectious laugh and a love for a good story, she shared her joy and optimism with the people that got to know her in the Westfield schools and neighborhoods.

Leonora loved to cook, read, knit, garden and most of all spend time with those she loved. She will be greatly missed by family, friends and the downtown Westfield community. A viewing will be held this Thursday from 5-8pm, with burial services on Friday at 11am at Dooley’s Colonial Funeral Home.
