Obituary for Kelly Ann May (Roberg)
Kelly Ann May, 62, died peacefully on April 13, 2017, at her home in Minnetonka. Kelly was born July 10, 1954, in Marshall, the fifth and youngest child of Wallace and Katherine (Tillemans) Roberg. Kelly initially resided in Minneota, but at a young age her family moved to Iowa, first to Muscatine and later to Cedar Rapids. Kelly graduated from Cedar Rapids Regis High School in 1973, and then graduated from Kirkwood Community College.
Kelly was married to her Cedar Rapids neighbor Steve May on August 9, 1980, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Minnetonka. They lived in Iowa City for a school year, then briefly in St. Paul before settling in Minnetonka, where they have resided for 34 years. Their marriage was blessed with three wonderful children, Zachary (San Antonio, Texas), Joshua, and Amelia (both of Eden Prairie.)
She is survived by her loving husband and children, her brother John (currently residing in Livingston, Montana), her sister Mary Kay Lenzo (Minnetonka), her brother Jim (Carolyn) of Cedar Rapids, and her brother Kevin (Cindy) of Naples, Florida, and many very special nieces and nephews, in-laws, and friends. Kelly was preceded in death by her dear young niece Kelsey in 1990, her father in 1993 and her mother in 1995.
Kelly was a child at heart, and found great joy in every minute she could spend with her children, nieces, nephews, and their children. She had very special memories of teaching beginning dance for several years at Deanne’s Dance Studio in Minnetonka. She was always best friends with daughter Amelia, and together they had varied adventures and created many great memories. Youth hockey, soccer, baseball, basketball and dance were a big part of family life. Kelly and Steve also enjoyed their special destination road trips in the Carolinas and Virginia during the many visits to Duke University for her medical care. She maintained a life-long friendship with her Cedar Rapids neighbors, Lou Ann Heng of Willmar and Lisa Rehman of Cedar Rapids (the Greco sisters.) She had a close bond with her birth family, and was fortunate to live in close proximity which allowed frequent interactions with her parents and especially with her sister.
Kelly had a strong Catholic faith, and was blessed with several special friends she met through her faith activities. They enriched her life, and she in return enriched theirs.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Kelly’s care providers for the past five years, especially the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and the Park Nicollet Frauenshuh Cancer Center in St. Louis Park. Very special thanks to the Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital Hospice Program for providing compassionate support which allowed Kelly to spend the past four months in hospice in the familiar comfort of her home, where she was surrounded with loving family and friends (and cats and dog.)
Mass of Christian Burial 11 AM Friday (4/21) at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 680 Mill Street, Excelsior. Visitation 5-8 PM Thursday at Huber Funeral Home, 520 2nd Street, Excelsior and one hour prior to Mass at CHURCH. Interment Resurrection Cemetery, Shorewood.
