Antoinette, Karl and Kristian:
Jochen was a such very significant contributor to TCPL's west to east expansion in the late 80s/early 90s to serve and build what became the Boundary Gas Project, the Iroquois Pipeline System (Phil Ashton of Yankee Gas called it "Jochen Schmitz's pipeline") and getting TCPL into the electric sector via Ocean State Power and several waste heat recovery conversation systems at TCPL’s mainline compressor stations.
Jochen's ability to keep everyone focused on the goal line was such a positive factor in the successes of TCPL's small group (Dave Russell, Brian Hill and several others) of irreverent "misfits" that made up its "Gas East" development group in the late 1970’s.
Jochen and the Gas East group's culture and innovative efforts underscore the importance of having a small group of free thinking project developers operating outside and independent of the operational department silos of a utility’s structure to allow innovative ideas and company building projects to move forward.
They were a great team and so instrumental at making TCPL into the Company it is today.
I am attaching a December 19, 1979 memo Jochen did on a meeting he and the Gas East team held in Ottawa on plans to export more gas into the Northeast US. This is the earliest document I have of what became over the several decades a multiplicity of projects that benefited: the TCPL shareholders; the Alberta Producers; the traditional gas utility customers in Eastern Canada and the Northeast US; and effectively changed the fuel mix of the electricity markets in the Northeast. In addition, these and follow on natural gas infrastructure projects significantly lowered the emissions levels as well.
Jochen did so much for the Oil and Gas industry of which the Schmitz family can be proud.
Sincerely,
Geoff
