Childhood memories of Mr. Claus........
Growing up on Ferney Street, ever present in my childhood memory, was Mr. Claus. He's the only man I'd ever seen in blue jeans, way more years before anyone thought they were a happening fashion trend. I always thought that Mr. Claus grew up on a farm because he was an amazing gardener. The Claus's home was always the best landscaped home on the block. And his grass was ledgendary - it was perfection always! Sadly, the people who bought the home after the family left for California, actually put white gravel in the front yard - a sacriledge for certain to such a gorgeous yard.
Mr. Claus was ever kidding my Mom - he was always friendly and joking around with us as we came and went from our driveway that was next to the Claus's small track home. I can still hear him saying....."You're mother wears army boots", "I see the beauty parlor was closed today", and many more.
Actually it was Mr. Claus who got the job of taking care of me (at three) when my Dad went to the hospital after my brother Mark was born. I remember Mr. Claus saying that my Dad went for a loaf of Italian bread. What a hoot - and there wasn't any Italian bread when my Dad can home just my Mom and a baby brother!
Mr. Claus was always such a sweet man, kind and thoughtful. He was a wonderful father to Cindy, who was so fortunate to have a Dad who built a small play house and her own wooden/log horse in their backyard. Mr. Claus was handy and creative!
I know that Mr. Claus was a devoted Catholic and always attended Mass. He was quiet about his faith but I know that he's was welcomed into Jesus's arms as he passed from this life into eternity.
Many sincere sypathies to Cindy and George and his wife and all their collective families. I know he'll be missed but it's my hope that all the wonderful memories that they have made will keep his memory alive.
With love, Wendy Cacamis Weinstein (childhood neighbor from Ferney Street)
