Obituary for Gwendolyn Aikman Garretti Bethancourt

Gwendolyn Aikman Garretti Bethancourt, “Gwen”, beloved mother and grandmother, age 76, of Bay St. Louis, MS, formerly of Terrytown, LA, passed away on April 30, 2017, in New Orleans, LA.

A memorial service will be held Monday, May 8, 2017, at St. Anne Catholic Church, 5858 Lower Bay Rd., Bay St. Louis, MS from 10:00am until service time at 11:00am. Burial to follow at Biloxi National Cemetery, Biloxi, MS.

Survivors include her children, Julie G. Hunger of Picayune, MS, Anthony J. Garretti, Jr. and wife, Arleen, of Waveland, MS, Michelle G. Cooper and husband, Jerry Cooper of Waveland, MS and Gina G. Charlet and husband, G.J. Charlet III of Zachary, LA.

Brothers, Robert Aikman of Sultan, Washington and James Ronald Aikman (Patricia), of Fulton, OH and sister-in-law, Theresa Aikman of Marrero, LA.

Beloved grandchildren are Julian Garretti, Jared Garretti, Georgia Charlet, Magnolia Charlet and Milo Charlet. Great-grandchildren, Remy and Finn Garretti. Also survived by the father of her children, Anthony J. Garretti, Sr. and nieces, nephews and extended family.

Preceded in death by her husband, Huey P. Bethancourt, Sr., mother, Catherine Daigle Aikman, father, James A. Aikman, Sr., brother, James A. Aikman, Jr., stepson, Joseph Bethancourt, and son-in-law, Charles W. Hunger.

Gwen was a performer from the age of 3, and had her own dance studio in Algiers, LA, at the age of 16. She could light up a stage with her grace and beauty. She performed in U.S.O. shows as well as carnival balls in New Orleans. A graduate of Martin Behrman H.S., Algiers, LA, she was also one of the first female drummers in their marching band.

Her smile lit up a room and she was truly a friend to all who met her.

Special thanks to the staff and elders of Dunbar Village, especially her aide, Shemma, as well as the Neuro-medical unit of Ochsner Hospital for their care and compassion.
