Obituary for George C. McCully

George C. McCully
George Charles McCully, 74, of Arnold, MD, passed away on May 26, 2017.

George was born in 1943 in Washington, DC to the late George Young McCully and Margaret Dale Havener. He was raised in Silver Spring, MD where he attended St. John’s College High School and made lifelong friends as the adopted son of Red Top Road. He graduated from the University of Maryland and served in the DC Air National Guard. George’s various jobs included airman, accountant, mechanic, loan officer, salesman, bus driver, and mail carrier. After working for both Mack Truck and B. Frank Joy Company, he began a successful 35-year career as a land developer, building communities in Southern Maryland. In 1972, George married Christine and they settled in Arnold. George and Chris’s weekends were spent boating on the Ricochet, cheering for the Redskins, skiing, and on the golf course; but their greatest interests revolved around their daughters, Danielle and Kathy. George often attended field trips and sporting events, and looked forward to welcoming his children’s friends into his home. Later in life, the family often gathered at their home on Hilton Head Island to spend time together. George was the consummate story teller with a laugh that invited you to tell him a joke. He truly never met a stranger, eager to learn every detail about those in his life. He loved his daily phone calls with his family and best friends, always finding joy in the ordinary.

George is survived by his wife of 45 years, Christine; by his daughter, Danielle and her husband, Ryan Hutcheson and their sons, McCully and Knox; by his daughter, Kathleen and her husband, David Bakke and their children, Luke and Lyla; and by his nephew, Charlie and niece, Carolyn and their families. He is preceded by his loving parents and his dearly missed sister, Joanne and her husband, Charles L. Boyd.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate George's life on Thursday, June 1 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD. A Memorial Mass will be offered on Friday, June 2, 2017 at 1:30 pm at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD. Interment will be private.
