Obituary for James J. Adamo

On June 20, 2017, Jim Adamo passed peacefully from this world after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1934 to parents who immigrated to the US from Sicily, Italy. After a brief residence in the Florida Keys, Jim moved his family to San Diego in 1962 and founded a construction company that developed a reputation for integrity, quality and service. He was eventually approached to design and build secure facilities for the US government. His ability to adapt and innovate led to long term success in the industry. This work took him throughout the United States, where he became known as an expert in his field.

Jim was also known for his generous spirit. From his earliest years in San Diego, he was an active member of many community organizations, including the United Italian American Association (where he helped to produce the annual Columbus Day Parade in downtown San Diego for many years), the Italian American Golf Association, and the Amici of Our Lady of the Rosary Church. His love of family and concern for children also spurred him to become one of the early supporters of Whispering Winds Catholic Conference Center in Julian, California. In later years his love of golf led him to become a member of Morgan Run Club and Resort, where he became a founding member of The Good Guys of Morgan Run, an organization that was committed to actively helping wounded and financially stressed soldiers, sailors and marines and their families. He served on the Good Guys board of directors for 12 years, helping numerous families in thanks of their service and sacrifice. Jim was also an active member of St James Catholic Church, serving as a member of both the finance committee and building committee and as Co-Chairman of their recent capital campaign.

Jim was known by many for his strong work ethic, integrity and generosity. He was always quick to stretch out his hand; whether in friendship, in thanks or to help someone in need. He was admired and loved by many, especially his family. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Barbara, and is survived by his daughters Michele (Gib) Ninness, MaryAnn (Ron) O’Bard, Cathy (Mike) Gaetke, and Christine (Mark) Bailey, 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held for Jim at St James Catholic Church in Solana Beach on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at 10 am.
