Obituary for William G. "Bill" Preston

WILLIAM G. PRESTON
William G. Preston, 94, passed away on July 12, 2017, at The Community at Rockhill in Sellersville, with his wife Dolores Liebert-Preston by his side. Bill was born on April 24, 1923, in New York City and grew up in Queens Village. Immediately after graduating from Jamaica High School in Queens, Bill served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a radio operator in the Pacific theater. Following the war, Bill worked for more than 30 years for Olin Mathiesen Chemical Corporation (later Olin Corporation) as a sales representative—first in Baltimore, then in New York City, Cleveland and Philadelphia, before retiring in 1985. A genuine people person, Bill frequently won awards for outstanding sales during his many years with Olin, a reflection of his sincere manner and outgoing personality. A long-time Bucks County resident and member of Doylestown United Methodist Church, Bill loved helping others. For many years, he volunteered at the church, at Peace Valley nature center, and with Meals on Wheels, distributing hot meals to shut-ins throughout the county. Bill enjoyed traveling and made several trips to Europe, including to England, where he was reunited with a cousin, George Preston and his wife Joyce, from his father’s side of the family. He also traveled often, mostly by car, around the United States and Canada. His love of golf stood him good stead, especially in retirement, when he played often in Florida and Maryland. He continued playing into his late eighties. His love of the game lives on through his grandson Jason, who inherited Bill’s clubs and now plays any chance he gets. In 2014, Bill joined a group of military veterans sponsored by the Bucks County Tour of Honor, who traveled by bus to Washington, DC and Virginia. There, they visited Arlington National Cemetery and several memorials, including the recently completed memorial to World War II veterans. The ongoing good work of this nonprofit organization is particularly meaningful today, in light of the dwindling number of living WWII veterans. Bill was predeceased by his father and mother William and Eleanor Preston; his sister Eleanor McCabe; his first wife Charlotte W. Preston (nee Burns); and his children Bruce and Gary Preston. Bill is survived by his second wife Dolores Liebert-Preston; his children William Jr. and his wife Mintari, and Keith and his wife Lisa; his grandchildren Sean, Jason, Kady and Jessica; his niece Eleanor Holzer, her husband Eugene, and their children Susan and Gregory. A memorial service will be held at Doylestown United Methodist Church, 320 E. Swamp Rd., Doylestown, PA on Monday, July 17. Visitation at 12:30, service at 1:30. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bills’ memory may be made to the charity of your choice or Doctors Without Borders, P.O. Box 5022, Hagerstown, MD 21741
