Obituary for Joan Hackett (Beekman)

Mrs. Joan Beekman Hackett, 86, passed away on Sunday, July 16, 2017, at her home in
Westfield, New Jersey. In earlier years Joan was blessed with great health. However, in the
past two years she endured many medical challenges. Throughout her struggles, she was
always upbeat and more concerned about the welfare of others than herself. She was a strong
woman who fought hard to survive, and as a testament to her strength she was in Hospice for
five months, defying even optimistic predictions.
Born September 3, 1930, Joan was raised in Dunellen, New Jersey by her parents Alice and
Francis Beekman. She attended Mount St. Mary’s Academy in Watchung and obtained a BA
degree from Douglass College for Women (later Rutgers University) in 1952. For several years
she taught middle school English and History in North Plainfield, New Jersey but her passion
for spreading knowledge and helping others was lifelong.
In 1959, Joan married the love of her life, John Hackett. She and John moved to Westfield after
their honeymoon, where they raised their two children and lived the rest of their lives.
Joan could best be described as everyone’s friend. She lived each day with positivity,
enormous faith, and care for others. She was a ray of sunshine to all she met and always had
a smile upon her face. She was an active volunteer with the PTO when her children were
young, Center for Hope Hospice in later years, and numerous other organizations in between.
Joan spent her golden years guiding her adult children, watching her beloved grandchildren
grow and being a loyal friend. Until her health prevented it, she was a daily mass communicant
at St. Michael’s Church in Cranford.
Joan was predeceased by her husband John, and is survived by her children Molly Hackett and
husband Warren Faure, and Jack Hackett and wife Cesarina. Additionally, she leaves seven
grandchildren (Christopher, Patrick, and Timothy Hackett, and Brian, Kevin, Jessica, and Katie
Faure), one great-grandchild (Ford Hackett), a loving extended family, and many friends.
Visitation will be Thursday July 20, 2017, from 4-8 pm at Dooley Colonial Funeral Home, 556
Westfield Avenue, Westfield. A funeral mass will be held Friday July 21, 2017 at 9:30 at St.
Michael’s Church located at 100 Alden Street in Cranford. Burial will follow at Fairview
Cemetery in Westfield. In lieu of flowers please send donations to St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare
Center in Madison, New Jersey.
Joan will be remembered for her kindness, strength, and wisdom. Her legacy will live on in the
many hearts she has touched. She was loved dearly and will be missed immensely.
