Copley Avenue
In early August of 1960 approaching our graduation year, Billy, I and my brother Winston somehow met up on Maple Street in Morrisville and decided to go for a casual walk up Copley Ave, a quarter mile long hill lined on both sides with granite light post topped with bubble glass lanterns, the avenue leading up to a neoclassical style 1910 constructed highschool with the intriguing name of "Peoples Academy".
We were all of a philosophical bent, my brother also being at the time a Catholic seminarian. It was a perfect August evening; the night sky was absolutely florescent with stars- we stopped counting at 3 billion. For the next 3 hours the three of us traipsed up and down Copley -which, remember, is only a quarter of a mile long- discussing the universe, creation, God and mans place in the great design of things.
Billy and I were classmates for 12 years, and after graduation we never saw each other again. But this night has worked its way into my consciousness a half dozen times a year, every year for the last 57 for reasons I do not comprehend.
Though I have not seen Billy for 57 years, he remains in my mind in a vibrant memory that will not perish. Rest well oh good and faithful servant.
