Obituary for Thomas Edward Kirwan

Thomas Edward Kirwan
KIRWAN, Thomas Edward – In loving memory of Thomas Edward Kirwan, who passed away peacefully early in the morning on Sunday, July 30, 2017, on his 91st birthday. Beloved husband of Audrey Mary (Nolan) Kirwan, who predeceased him in March 2015, also at the age of 91. Loving father of five children who are all residents of the City of Greater Sudbury, including Robert (Valerie), Frank (Pam), Carol (Clayton Bechard, predeceased); Wayne (Monique), and Janet (Gerald Ambeau). Cherished grandfather of Ryan, Warren, Marty, Tyler, Vanessa, Adam, Corey, Ashley, Katie and Shane. Treasured Great Grandfather of Hailee, Hannah, Cade, Brittney, Austin, Keelan, Aislin, Makenzie, Joshua, Dakota, Riley, Karina, Lacey, Oakley and Gwendolen. Dear son of Cornelius Kirwan and Nathalie Belanger, both predeceased. Dear brother of Thomas Sr. (J. Downey), Rachel (A. Gallant), Margaret (P. Sawyer), Cecile (W. Dufavre), Alphonse, Cornelia (J. Cresswell), John (G. Shaw), Loretta (Sister of St. Joseph), Yvonne (L. Sheahan), Mabel (E. Clement), Archie (Resurrectionist Order), all predeceased. He was born in Coniston on July 30, 1926, and moved to Sudbury in 1931 where he attended Christ the King Church where he married Audrey in 1949. The two had celebrated almost 66 years of marriage at the time of her death. They lived in the same house in Lively from 1955 to 2015, moving to Meadowbrook Retirement Village February 2015 where he has since resided. Thomas was a devoted Roman Catholic who placed family and Church first in his life. He was a wonderful husband and father who was always supportive and encouraging with his children. He also valued his Church and his community. Thomas and Audrey were active members of the Walden Senior’s Club, Seniors Bowling League, Meals on Wheels, the Holy Name Society and many other community and church organizations over the years. He always lent a hand in helping with odd jobs around St. Pius X Church in Lively and was absolutely thrilled when the parish reopened recently. He and Audrey took part in the Senior Bowling League up to the fall of 2014. Thomas was an outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He loved spending time at his camp on Lake Wahnapitae while the children were growing up. He was also an excellent athlete who participated in competitive sports such as hockey and baseball in his younger years. Thomas loved music and was always bringing us into his bedroom at Meadowbrook to listen to his great collection of oldie goldie records. Each time the music filled the room it brought a sparkle to his eye and a smile to his face as if he were hearing it for the first time. Up until just a few weeks ago he still enjoyed a rousing game of pool with any of us that visited. He worked as a summer student at the INCO Research Department from 1943 to 1945 and was hired for permanent employment in that department on May 10, 1946. After his marriage in 1949 he transferred to Coniston to work on the Iron Ore Project before moving to Lively in 1955 to work at the Iron Ore Recovery Plant as a Supervisor. He retired on May 1, 1982 with 37 years of accredited service. He was known as a leader who always showed respect for his staff, and the employees who worked for him felt that they could approach him with any concern. He was dearly loved and will be missed by everyone who knew him. Funeral Visitation will be at the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home on Paris Street, Tuesday, August 1, 2017 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. with parish prayers at 3pm Tuesday. Funeral mass will be held at St. Pius X Church in Lively on August 2, 2017 at 10 a.m. Cremation with burial in the Family Plot at St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Donations to Meals on Wheels would be appreciated.
