Maria Guadalupe Ascencio (Ybarra)
Maria Guadalupe (Lupe) Ybarra Ascencio, 88, of Merkel, passed away August 6, 2017 in Abilene, Texas.
Visitation will be held at Starbuck Funeral Home in Merkel on August 09, 2017 at 5:00 – 7:00 pm. Rosary will be held at 7:00 pm.

Funeral service will be held at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church on August 10, 2017 at 10:00 am with Father Lorenzo Hatch officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Starbuck Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements.

Lupe was born in Merkel, Texas to Alionzo and Felicitas Duran Ybarra on April 19, 1929. She attended school in Mexico where she lived most of her as her father worked the railroad. She married Arnulfo Cuin Ascencio on February 25, 1947, in Torreon, Coahuila Mexico and they moved back to Merkel to raise their family. She owned and operated, “El Unico” Mexican Restaurant for several years. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Her passion was her family and cooking for the masses.

Holidays were a joyous occasion at the Ascencio household. Our matriarch would cook as if an army were coming. It would not be a surprise to anyone when we sat down for dinner and a complete stranger sat next to us. Mom and Dad welcomed all people to our table, our house. Mom always made more than enough in case there was someone in need. She was known for the delicious meals she provided to family and friends.

Lupe is preceded in death by her parents, Alionzo and Felicitas; her brother Manuel, her husband Arnulfo her grandson and his wife Eric Matthew and Alyssa Ascencio, and her son-in-law Walter Michael Broadzick.

Lupe is survived by her children, Maricela Cascio of Round Rock, Wilfredo, Junior and Hector of Abilene, Betty Buitron of Laredo, Dora Asencio of Merkel, Patricia Tice of Abilene, Kandi Darnell of Devine, Roni Asencio of Pflugerville, 19 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Hendrick Hospice Care for their caring support in her final days. Should family or friends desire, in lieu of flower arrangements, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hendrick Hospice Care 1651 Pine Street Abilene, Texas 79601, in memory of Maria Lupe Asencio.
