Obituary for Rodger G. "Smiley" Henry

Rodger G. "Smiley" Henry
Rodger G. Henry, age 85, of York, died peacefully at home, Tuesday, August 8, 2017. Born in York on June 16, 1932, he was the son of the late Wilford G. and Ada L. (Heilman) Henry. Rodger was the loving husband of Sylvia M. (Smeltzer) Henry for 61 years.

Rodger, known as “Smiley” to friends, was a 1950 graduate of William Penn Senior High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. Rodger was a retired auto mechanic. He was a member of the Pleasureville American Legion, Post #799, and the Izaak Walton League of America, York Chapter #67.

Rodger was a very active member of Bethany United Methodist Church. As the church handyman, he always wore a cardigan and was affectionately called “Mr. Rodgers” by the children of the church.

In his spare time, Rodger enjoyed Amateur Radio, fishing, boating, gardening, and tinkering with just about anything as “Mr. Fix It”. If it needed fixing, Rodger was there for family, friends, neighbors, whomever. He loved taking trips with his family, near and far. He was endeared to his ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren as “Babba.”

In addition to his beloved wife Sylvia and their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Rodger is survived by his daughter Julie L. Henry of Hanover, and his sons: Timothy G. Henry, and his wife Linda P. Henry of Palm Springs, CA, and David B. Henry, and his wife Jill E. Henry of Lincroft, NJ. He was preceded in death by his son Ben E. Henry (married to Sherri L. Henry), who died in 2014, and his sister Dorothy A. Mummert (married to David Mummert), who died in July.

A memorial service to honor Rodger’s life will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at Bethany United Methodist Church, 1401 Mount Rose Avenue, York, PA 17403, with the Reverend Mr. Wayne Heberling officiating. Military Honors will be accorded at the church by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at a luncheon following the service in the church’s social hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate that donations in Rodger’s memory be made to Bethany United Methodist Church.

Arrangements by the Etzweiler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 1111 East Market Street, York, PA 17403.
