Always the Teacher
Mr. Alderson is this - was this you? Are you - were you my art teacher at Forest Heights from 1974 through 1976? Did you not take my class to Kleinburg to marvel first hand at the majesty of the Group of Seven at a time when Steve Martin could barely count to seven? Were you the one who encouraged me in my awkward impressionistic still life study but also took me to task when I became too prideful of a pen and ink portrait? Were you not making a less than subtle point when you brought to class one of your marvelous ink drawings of a dragon? And finally, after I had already graduated did you not honour me with the Grade 13 achievement award in art?
I noticed your obituary listed artist first and teacher last amongst your list of accomplishments. I know, I know. I never amounted to much of a teacher but remain a devoted student of art and you played a memorable role in my development to this end. And now, when I have reached a time in my own walk of life where I look back fondly on the memory of the Mr. Alderson I once knew I also have regrets at not having known the Willen Alderson who assuredly could have taught me more.
