Obituary for John David Tingley Jr.

John David Tingley Jr.
Surrounded by his loving family, John David Tingley, Jr., 80, a resident of Encino, California, peacefully went to be with the Lord Jesus at 5:55 pm on Saturday, August 26, 2017, at Providence Tarzana Hospital.

John was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on Thursday, November 5, 1936, to John and Elizabeth (Lane) Tingley, Sr. and raised in northern California. One of John’s proudest moments was successfully raising funds enabling him to compete in the 1957 Milan Deaf Olympics in the 400m hurdles. He proceeded to attend Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., where he met his beautiful bride and the love of his life, Helen. The two were united in marriage on June 10, 1967, in Nyack, New York, and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They built a wonderful life and loving family together in the Los Angeles area of California.

John is survived by his devoted wife, Helen Margaret (Merritt); his eldest daughter, Lizz and her husband, Josue Mendez; daughter Joan and her husband, Ron Bruyninckx; and youngest daughter Eva and her husband, Peter Nikkos. He is also survived by his five loving grandchildren: Ben, Eleanor, Jacob, Amelia, and Merritt (MJ); as well as his sister Jennifer and her husband Dan Kaul, many nieces and nephews, and his two doting dogs, Stella and Stubby.

Family, friends, and those whose lives were touched by John and his family are invited to celebrate his life at the Memorial Service and light potluck reception afterward on Saturday, September 16, 2017, at 10:00am at The Church at Rocky Peak - 22601 Santa Susana Pass Rd, Chatsworth CA 91311, with Dr. Francis Casale officiating. www.SignUpGenius.com/go/30E0A4EADA822A6FB6-john

In lieu of flowers, a contribution can be made in honor of John's favorite ministry at his church, Inter Community Church of God (I.C.C.). Funds will be used to install permanent pew cushions for their Deaf-Blind congregation. Donations made out to I.C.C. can be mailed to the family, or brought to the memorial.

The family specifically wishes to thank the incredible medical staff at Providence Tarzana Hospital, who worked with compassion and empathy, caring for John during this difficult time.

It would have pleased John to know that we are finding comfort in his favorite Bible verse:
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” John 14:6
