For nearly two years (2007-09), I worked with Angel at Burlington Coat Factory. I was the manager of the shoe department, and from my first day until my last day there, Angel was my right hand man, my #1 guy. The department was a disaster when I took over, a complete mess. At first, Angel excelled at getting the things done that I assigned him to do, but eventually, he began to take on projects all on his own, and he constantly amazed me with his work ethic and competency. He knew what needed to be done, and how I wanted it done. Angel was one of those people that just needed someone to believe in him and encourage him, and he would take it from there. And so he did.
One Sunday, Angel worked, while I had the day off. Since it was a Sunday and he was by himself, I didn't leave him any projects to do. When I came in on Monday morning, I walked around the department. We had a clearance aisle for the women's boots, since it was already spring/summer, and they were out of season. That aisle stayed messed up, and was hard to keep organized. I walked around the department, and noticed that the clearance aisle was incredibly neat and organized. Angel just took it upon himself to do it, and he did a phenomenal job, doing something that was very tedious, demanding and difficult. When he came in that afternoon, I asked him about it, and he just grinned and said, "yeah, I thought you would appreciate getting that aisle cleaned up and organized." That was Angel, going above and beyond the call of duty.
Less than three months after taking over the department, our district manager pronounced the shoe department to be the most improved department in the store, and also the best department in the store. It was an enormous amount of work, and I could not have even begun to accomplish it without Angel. I relied on him and depended on him and he always came through. Any success that I had there, Angel shared in that success. He was absolutely indispensable to me. He was a fantastic guy, and a devoted and loyal worker.
