Peter J. Papula, Jr.
Peter J. Papula, Jr., 88, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, September 27, in Poughkeepsie after a brief illness.

Born October 2, 1928, Peter was the son of Peter and Agnes (Pacejka) Papula. Deeply rooted in Beacon, Peter was the second of eight children. He graduated from Beacon High School, and served in the US Army at Fort Eustis in Virginia. He enjoyed an accomplished career as a New York State Corrections Officer at Matteawan (Fishkill Correctional), in addition to his service as an electrician, and working as a car inspector on the railroad.

In August 1951, Peter married Frances Bowen, known affectionately as Beanie. He was predeceased by his wife in 1990.

Peter took great pride in the Chelsea homestead he built for his family, and enjoyed stock car racing, fishing, golf, and satisfying his insatiable sweet tooth. He was adored by his relatives and friends, and his towering presence, dynamic conversation, and sage wisdom will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Peter is survived by his son, James, and his wife, Barbara, of Chelsea; daughter-in-law, Deborah Papula of Porter Corners; brothers Lawrence and his wife, Catherine, and Bill, of Beacon and sister Dolores Baca of Highland; grandson Peter Papula IV, and his wife, Toni, of West Palm Beach, FL; granddaughters Marissa Corliss and her husband, Steven, of Boston, MA, and McCarry Papula of Chelsea; great-grandsons Cody Papula, and his wife, Christina, and Jordan Papula; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his son, Peter Papula III, in July 2017, and by his brothers, Joseph, Martin, Rudolph, and John.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Mary, Mother of the Church, Fishkill, on Peter’s 89th birthday: Monday, October 2, at 10:15 AM. Interment in Cold Spring will follow.
