Obituary for Raymond Freedman

Raymond Freedman, 88, of Norwich, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at the Norwich Rehabilitation & Nursing Center after a courageous battle against a prolonged illness.

Born April 2, 1929, in Philadelphia, PA, Raymond was the son of Harry and Rae (Anthony) Freedman. He graduated from Overbrook High School with the Class of 1946. After high school, Raymond enrolled at Temple University, but transferred after two years to the former Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science where in 1954 he earned his bachelor’s of science degree. For three years thereafter, Raymond worked at Fort Detrich, in Frederick, MD, then pursued a master’s degree at Penn State University. He earned that degree in 1959.

On August 23, 1958, in Frederick, MD, Raymond married his beloved wife of 59 years, Grace (Kemp) Freedman. After completing Raymond’s graduate studies, the two would move to Norwich. In Norwich, Raymond began work at Norwich Pharmacal Company as a microbiologist until his retirement in 1989 from what was then Procter & Gamble.

Raymond was a member of the Norwich Jewish Center and was active in the Chenango Community Players. He was a longtime member of the Norwich Service Club.

In addition to his wife, Raymond is survived by son Daniel Freedman, of Norwich, stepson Brad (Norma) Amador, of Alexandria, VA, stepdaughter Linda Amador, of Utica, and brothers Dr. Jerry (Miriam) Freedman and Albert (Janis) Freedman. He was predeceased by brother Frank Freedman.

Funeral services for Raymond will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 2, 2017, at the Norwich Jewish Center, where Rabbi Dena Bodian will officiate. Burial will immediately follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.

The Jewish custom does not involve flowers. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Raymond’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
