Condolence From: Rory McGuire
Condolence: I never met the man, his family, or probably anyone who knew him. However, he brought me hours and hours of joy and entertainment. I like to imagine that this is what he wanted. Most entertainers can only hope to do what he did, which was to make me feel like I knew his characters. Like I knew about their feelings, their history, and their story. He resonated beyond the screen. I have also found many of his personal films, interviews, and other content online and I always watched them (often multiple times) hoping to learn something about myself and how I could be better. Mr. Dunsworth, you were one of the good guys. You will be missed.

Condolence: My empathies to you and your family from Ohio. Upon seeing Mr. Dunsworth for the first time on the brilliant 1st season of TPB, I knew he was a special kind of human. He exuded such a deep love with a calm dignity, he seemed like someone to admire. The world is better having had his light lead us to where he was, and we are all blessed to experience his gifts to the cosmos. Peace unto you.

Condolence From: Shawn Berry
Condolence: I was shocked to learn that John had passed away suddenly, as others were. I never had a chance to meet the man as I did his colleagues from Trailer Park Boys when they came to Ontario. Like others, I knew the on-screen persona of his character. I know that is not who John was and his life story in various articles is fascinating. I was in Halifax for the first time in August and I can only imagine that John loved that city, Nova Scotia and the sea that surrounds it. In life, he lived and loved what he did, and did what others can only dream: living life on his terms. I guess what inam saying is that if most of us didn't know him personally, the legacy of his life is that you should go for the things you want, give of yourself and share your knowledge unselfishly. Be a mentor. Stay true to one's self, if I can quote a school motto. John probably want us all to live life on our terms and live it to the fullest. Do what you dream and do it before you have regrets. We can honour him by living the way he would want us to. This is how I see it and I hope that I am right. This is how I will remember the man who touched countless lives through his craft without knowing him personally. God Bless. RIP.

Condolence From: Anna Smith and
Condolence: I am so very sorry for the sudden loss of John, for his family, everyone he worked with, and for his fans all over the world. I'm sure people everywhere will agree with the meaning of W.H. Auden's quote as it applies to John Dunsworth " Among those whom I like and admire, I can find no common denominator, but among those I love, I can: all of them make me laugh ". And John certainly made us laugh. He helped my little family get through some very tough times and brought us so much joy with his brilliant performances as Mr. Layhey, and I'm sure he was the anchor that held the show together, because whenever we watched 'the boys' escapades, in the back of our minds was always the question..." How will Mr. Layhey react when he finds out..." When I saw a poster for the " Randy and Mr. Layhey" show in Vancouver a couple of years ago, I had to go and see them live, though to tell you the truth, I didn't know what to expect, because there is a difference between television and stage. And having worked in comedy myself, I know that performing live can be risky at best. I need not have worried, because the show was brilliantly funny, as great as anything I've seen in my life, and also very brave, and challenging authority, as the best comedy should ! Then, to top it off we got to meet the stars afterwards, as they kindly signed autographs and posed for photos. John Dunsworth was so gracious, playing a game of pool with his fans(he quietly quickly won it!), and posing with props from the show, and taking time to speak with one and all. When I mentioned that I lived on a rickety old boat, at a nameless marina which is the Fraser River equivalent of Sunnyvale, John then began drawing his idea of such a place, on the back of an already autographed photo, and I realized not only was he a gifted actor but also very talented as a visual artist! So, thank you from the bottom of my heart to his family for letting us "borrow" your loved one who brought us so much joy, and please know that that we share your deep sorrow, and our tears are escaping, as we sit in libraries, or ride the buses home from work, knowing that likes of him is rare indeed. He is a bright comet we will always remember .

Condolence: Hello John's Family I was stunned when I heard the news that John "crossed over the rainbow bridge" at such a young age. I first met him in the mid-1980s through our involvement with the NDP. He hosted the "Band '87" fundraiser which featured musicians and entertainers from across the province. While he was the "star" he made everyone look so good. And then there was the 1988 election when John was the candidate in Halifax-Bedford Basin and created that "I think therefore I am, NDP" button. A lot of us are scrambling to see if we still have it in our collection. Through the intervening years our paths crossed, especially when a young person needed some sage advice to break into the acting business. Simply directing someone to a good photographer meant John could do a better job of casting that person. He was amazing that way. I also remember a very solemn conversation we had at the NDP provincial office about VLTs. John's passing is very sad. But his presence amongst us should make us glad. Peace, Love & Solidarity.

Condolence: I was in shock when I heard the news. John was one to be always in your corner. I remember times when I first started in this business of acting he would always encourage me when I thought I nothing to give or Talent. John pulled this out of me and I know he would be proud. Thanks for giving. Will miss you.

Condolence: I cannot simply put into words or begin to express my sincere condolences I have for the Dunsworth family. John was truly an amicable force among people I look to for inspiration. He was the embodiment of perseverance, a terrific example of the phrase "carpe diem", and a genuine demeanor for anybody willing to reach out to him. However that may have been. I discovered the work of John Dunsworth late in my life, and wish that the road could have been crossed sooner. Only so that I could have had more time to perhaps have the shot to pick his brain someday on just about any topic. Crazy I know, but from what I gather john always had the time for his fans and family. That is an example I think that all should live by. Everyday that passes by in my life will in some way honor the late great john dunsworth. he's left such an incredible example behind for all to follow. Again, all of my love and deep respect go to the wife/children/family of John Dunsworth. I will forever miss him. R.I.P. -Brandon R. Wood

Condolence: John Dunsworth set Nova Scotia on the map for the film world. I had the pleasure of being cast by him as an extra on many occasions and through John experienced my first casting sin film. From his tiny office on Hollis Street where he worked tirelessly casting actors and extras, and also working on his love of theatre either professionally or in his spare time. He also used his office to work with others in training for acting roles and theatre. When he finally made it big with the Trailer Park Boys, I was not surprised to see him cast in huge Hollywood series like ' Criminal Minds', it seemed he was living the dream. At the height of his success, John Dunsworth has died. John Dunsworth labored and invested all he had, his entire life in the field. John’s immense contribution to the film industry will continued to be felt in Canada and abroad. He leaves us with an incredible legacy. John Dunsworth was the backbone of the film industry in Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia is forever indebted to him, as are so many actors who have gotten the start in their careers, such as Ellen Page who starred in Hollywood blockbuster films such as X-Men and ' Inception'. Rest in Peace John, thank you for helping us to see and realize our greatness as individuals and as Nova Scotians. We are better because you lived.

Condolence: My deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Dunsworth. While I did not know him personally or have the pleasure of meeting him I got to experience his genius through his work. Watching him play Mr. Lahey over the years has helped me get through a lot of tough times. His delivery of lines was so great and funny I would have to rewind and watch them over again and I would laugh til tears rolled down my face. Even watching Youtube videos of him showing off his stone work showed what a great person he was. I cannot imagine what you are all going through having lost an amazing person such as John. Love from a fan in Dublin, Ireland.

Condolence: My son often spoke of the Trailer Park Boys --but he and his friends said I would not "like it". I was in an accident this summer and found the show and began watching it. I laughed every day during my recovery due to Mr. Dunsworth and other actors. Mr. Dunsworth was the epicenter for all that happened in the trailer park and I loved every minute of it! Plan to watch it again in remembrance of this wonderfully talented man! He will live on because those who brought laughter to others will live in their hearts forever.

Condolence: I would like to give my deepest condolences to John & his family. I have only known John for a few years but his impact on me is huge. I bought a painting of John's for charity and planned to gift it back to them so he could auction it off again. John came down to Syracuse to visit me between or during a performance he was doing locally. When I first met him he had pretended to be sick with a "Terrible cold" but I was quick to find out this was his "Out if he needed it" he stood outside my house amazed at the trees in my yard and began to ask questions about them. We soon began to talk about varieties of trees and all that encompassed the world of them. Well after he found out I was a antique dealer and that contained within my home was beautiful treasures. He immediately was "No longer sick" and we talked and and talked and he opened up like a flower. We became friends that day and that evening he invited me to his event (I had not planned attending) and during the performance he gave me a shout out to the audience and said amazing things about me and it was an incredible thing for me to be so humbled by such a fine human being. We spent that day earlier talking about the book he was writing and for a year after I would text him ideas and he would tell me what was happening with the characters and such. It was hoot and a honor to know this man and my life will be forever changed by his presence and kindness. This is just "Little me" a nobody of the earth. A person just like th rest. His life changed mine and I will never forget you John. May you Rest In Peace.

Condolence: 'The granite stones have dimmed their glint in solemn respect for their builder' I met John in 1973? at the Rebecca Cohn during the NS High School Drama Festival. Our drama club at St. Pat's was under Joe and Judy Ballah. One cast member coated his body in Vaseline to look sweaty with muscles. John, while appreciative of the efforts made in enhancing the character's physical appearance, John stated simply, 'IT DIDN'T WORK'. I can still hear John Dunsworth saying that. Early this spring, John sat down and recited the entire 'Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner' from memory for my friend and her family, who never met John before, at the Stretch Diner in Chester. John had so much more to do in life and has left his people much too soon. What madness and shenanigans he and Jim Cleveland must have enjoyed.

Condolence: To the ENTIRE Dunsworth family it is with great respect that I send this out, my family and I are beyond saddened to hear out the passing of such a great human being.. I know what it's like to loose a member of the family suddenly. We moved from Calgary to Dartmouth in hopes of catching Haven being filmed, sadly we didn't get to see that and although one of my dreams was to meet the entire main cast of Haven that will never come to pass.. I will admit I have never seen an episode of TPB, but have seen every episode of Haven 28 times over and from what I could tell he was an very funny man and it was and is a privilege to have had the time to see him that I did.. Please take care Dunsworth family and know my family has you in their thoughts

Condolence: I'd like to begin by saying that I've been a huge fan of John's work for many years, and since his passing I've taken time to reflect on the impact he has had on my life. Through periods of depression, loss, and sorrow in my life, John and the others on Trailer Park Boys have been a constant source of joy, laughter, and happiness. I could turn the show on in the darkest of times and find the glimmer of joy I needed to turn things around. This may sound strange, but it is my experience. I had the pleasure of meeting John during one of his shows with Pat (Randy) and he was funny, charming, and incredibly generous to all that were present. I will treasure the picture he signed for me, and the laughs as we talked for a few minutes. A great man, a great actor, and a genius at what he did is how I would describe him, and as I told him when we met, I cannot put into fitting words my gratefulness for the times his work helped bring me out of a dark place and find laughter. Thank you, John. To his family, may I extend my deepest condolences and my best wishes for the future as you go through this difficult time.

Condolence: My family and I send our sincere condolences with sympathy to the family and friends of John Dunsworth. I did not know John the individual well, but I knew his character Jim. I even had the honor of meeting him, and my wife had the honor of participating in a skit with him. His character was as funny as believable. That is the hallmark of talent and passion. To act so well, as to, if only for a moment, believe what is being presented to you. John's talent and passion will be greatly missed. He has touched the hearts and minds of millions. So, I would like to thank John, for all of the work he has done in the performing arts community, and for sharing that talent and passion through his performances. We send our love to his friends and family.

Condolence From: Elizabeth Rhymer
Condolence: Oh, Libby, I can't imagine the whole left in your days with John's passing. I know we haven't seen each other in many years but I have been in touch with John through theatre a few times over the years and he was always so helpful, kind, giving of his time and expertise, and helpful with our daughter, Anna, in the same manner. Watching his career blossom from the best Santa ever!!! at Sears, delighting our toddlers, to doing every barnyard animal in our kitchen to a spellbound audience of two little girls, and then the mainstream work he has done...always 'all in' in any endeavour. His stonework, many years ago inspired me to try a little of the same. Truly an artist in every sense of the word! Steven passed away in 2006 but I know he shared the girls' and my respect and caring for him. Our thoughts are with you and your family. Elizabeth

Condolence: John may be best known for his Mr. Lahey character but before all that, he was an actor, director and teacher who every year went out to schools to help students get ready for the Nova Scotia High School Drama Festival. My students at Halifax West High School adored him and I learned to be a better drama teacher watching him develop characters and scripts with my kids. He was kind, perceptive, tireless and, yes, very funny. At one Drama Festival, John and I ended up in an elevator with Conway Twitty, in town for a concert. Without missing a beat, John slipped into conversation mimicking Mr. Twitty's southern drawl. Twitty did not seem to notice but the rest of us in the elevator certainly struggled to keep up the charade. John was just totally invested with whatever the present moment offered. My deepest condolences to the family.

Condolence From: Jeff Sampson
Condolence: A fantastic actor, taken far too soon. He played his characters with passion, humanity, and depth. Even the arguably villian character of Jim Lehey did what he did less for personal reasons, mostly because he wanted to make the park a nice place to live. Something no other actor could have pulled off with the same level of warmth and compassion.

Condolence: Ever since I was a young kid in grade 5 or 6 I have been watching the show. I am now 25 years old and would like to thank John for all the life lessons he had to offer in his role as Lahey. Bubbles was my favorite but there was always something about John and the way he made every episode more funny than it already was. The show has impacted my life in a big way. There is nothing I can say to make this hurt any less but I hope this does help a little. John was and always will be an amazing guy. This is hard to take in after all the build up for season 12... I am going to watch it with a heavy heart. Thank you to Johns family and thank you John. Whenever I feel upset or down I will watch the show. Thinking so less of my problems and thinking more about how Mr Lahey is gonna catch ricky this time. My deepest condolences to anyone who ever had the amazing opportunity to know John. I'm so sorry for this very heartbreaking loss. And ps Sarah please don't ever give up on that show... you are one of my favorites and to see you not there and no Mr Lahey.... it would be to much <3

Condolence: It’s rare that a performer merits the term legend, or that the person behind the character measures up to their public affection and esteem. Mr. Dunsworth succeeded on both counts. His performances will live on to entertain new generation since of fans, and his example as a friend and family man will long endure and inspire. He brought a truly unforgettable character to life in addition to his services to the crafts of theater, television and film. After his great successes he remained a friendly, approachable man; he wore the title of legend lightly and gracefully. We mourn his passing but celebrate the body of work he left us and which we’ll forever cherish, along with his memory. My condolences to all - family, friends and fans - whose lives are affected by his loss.

Condolence: Dear Dunsworth family. I remember John from the days when he talked with young Halifax theatre students of his plans for a theatre at Pier One. What an interesting place to spend time at; backstage, onstage and in the warren of the crumbling old victorian building. There were doors leading to nowhere, and one could find artists, poets, and activists mixing with actors. Sprinkled with neighbouhood kids who came to help and also stayed off the streets. What a lovely gift of John’s passions. Fast forward all these years. I still am around kids in assorted schools. On Monday there were many young people talking about John and what his work meant to them. A living legacy. My thoughts are with all the family.

Condolence: John was an amazing actor and an even better person. After meeting him years ago at a show in my Ontario hometown (Penetanguishene...or 'Anguish' as he jokingly referred to it), he invited us out to his place and aboard his beloved Emerald Princess when we visited Nova Scotia. It was my wife's first time on the Atlantic ocean. Thank you John for the fantastic conversations and the memories. Our deepest condolences to the Dunsworth family. He will be missed, but his spirit and legacy will live on forever.

Condolence: To John's family, I am writing on behalf of Bruce Grant , an old friend of John's. Bruce is very sad to learn of John's passing and says "it seems too soon." Bruce cared deeply for John and remembers his friendship with John and their mutual love of language. Just recently we looked at a lovely photo Bruce had taken of John and his oldest daughter. Bruce expresses his condolences to John's family and would like them to know he shares their grief. Libby Tingley, friend of Bruce Grant

Condolence From: John Mabley
Condolence: I arrived at the University of Guelph with John in 1967, although he turned up driving an antique flatbed truck he'd driven from Nova Scotia. Always a character and fun to be around, I think all of us who met him back then knew John was destined for a creative career. And he did with remarkable success.

Condolence From: Brenda Durdle
Condolence: My deepest sympathy to all of John's family and friends. I remember first meeting him in Halifax when I lived in the Tartan building and Libby's store was nearby. He was an essential part of the downtown Halifax scene. He could launch into a monologue just out of the blue when one would run into him. He was brilliant and a delightful presence wherever he went. This is an enormous loss for the arts scene in Nova Scotia. John was a good man and he will be greatly missed.
