Obituary for Becky Ann Hughes

Becky Ann Braun Hughes, 77, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 21, 2017. She was born in Dayton, OH on April 8, 1940, to William Carl and Ruth (Eyler) Braun. The Braun family lived in several places in Ohio, then in William’s Bay, WI, (where Becky started school), then in Fort Davis, TX, where the family lived on Mt. Locke. After two and a half years, the family moved to Las Cruces, NM, and Becky graduated from Las Cruces High School in 1958. She then went to work for Las Cruces Public Schools under Mr. J. Paul Taylor. In 1959 she married the love of her life, J.O. Hughes, who preceded her in death after 54 years of marriage. Their first son, Jay Olin, was born May 30, 1964. Becky and J.O. were the first owners and operators of the Baskin Robbins Ice Cream store in Las Cruces. Their second son, William Carl (Whip), was born December 23, 1968. Due to job transfers, the family lived in Alabama, Kwajalein, and California before returning to Las Cruces. While working for the city of Las Cruces, she earned her degree in business from Dona Ana Community College. After retiring, she volunteered with Memorial Medical Center Auxiliary working in the gift shop and making meal tray favors for the patients there. She loved making beautiful greeting cards for everyone. Her greatest pleasure was her family. She was a very generous, kind, loving, and humble person who will be deeply missed. Becky is survived by sons Jay and wife Deborah (Howey), and William “Whip” and wife Iwona (Wojcinska); granddaughters Kelsey Brown and Haylee Hughes; grandsons Curtis, Joshua and Timothy Hughes; sisters Nancy Lou Galloway of Las Cruces and Linda Sue Braun of Gresham, Oregon; nieces Teresa Fitzpatrick and Jodie Galloway; nephews Shane and Tyler Williams and William Cammack; aunts Arthella and Ginny Eyler, uncle Raymond Eyler, and many cousins in Ohio. Becky was predeceased by her parents in 1967. Viewing will take place in the chapel at 11 a.m., with the service starting at 12 p.m. in the sanctuary on Friday, Oct. 27, 2017 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 225 West Griggs St. in Las Cruces. Dr. Doug Weeks will officiate. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Gardens. In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to do so may make a contribution to Memorial Medical Center Auxiliary, Safe Haven Animal Shelter, St. Paul’s Methodist Church or charity of choice in Becky’s memory.
