Obituary for John W. "Jack" Haley

John W. "Jack" Haley
John “Jack” William Haley, 83, of South Burlington, died November 3, 2017, at Our Lady of Providence, surrounded by his family.
Jack, a proud Irish-Catholic, was born in Detroit, Michigan on January 15, 1934, the son of the late William Robert “Bob” Haley, and Katherine “Kitty” Haley.
Jack was a graduate of St. John’s Academy in Plattsburgh, New York, where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball. After high school, Jack attended Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. During college, Jack married his high school sweetheart, the late Gail P. Achen, in St. John’s Church, Plattsburgh, on August 28, 1954. Jack went on to work for G.E. for 30 years before retiring in 1992.
He was an active member of the Burlington Elks Lodge for over 25 years, often serving as Flag Day chairman. Jack was an avid golfer, and his fellow Elks Club members and other friends honored him with a golf tournament in his name, the “Jack Haley Golf Classic”, which was held annually for several years at the Saranac Inn-- the same resort he spent his honeymoon many years prior. Jack was a lifelong fan of Notre Dame; his personality and spirit were a great representation of the school’s nickname... “The Fighting Irish.”
Jack is survived by four children; Timothy Haley, and his wife, Mary-Jane, of Danbury Connecticut, Kim Haley-Chioffi, and her husband, Gregory, of South Burlington, Christopher Haley, of Burlington, and John Haley, and his wife, Martha, of Williston. He is survived by eight grandchildren; Timothy Haley Jr., and his fiancé Casey, Rory Healy, and her husband, Austin, Nicholas Chioffi, Benjamin Chioffi, and his wife Joanna, Shannon, Courtney and Ryan Haley, Lauren Fennelly, and her husband, Richie, and Shane Haley. Jack also leaves two great-grandchildren; Isabella Haley and Calvin Chioffi, a brother, Robert Michael Haley, and his wife Vicky, of Peterborough, New Hampshire, and many nieces, nephews and cousin, Bobby Haley.
Jack is also predeceased by three sisters, Elizabeth Jeane Jenkins, Kathryn Noreen Rivers, Patricia Marie Haley, and a grand nephew, Michael Corrigan. Lastly, Jack is recently predeceased by his brother-in-law and dear friend, David Rivers.
Special thanks to the staff of Our Lady of Providence for their loving care of Jack over the last two years. The family would also like to thank the VNA Hospice team for their kindness and support.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, November 10th, from 9 A.M.-10:30 A.M. at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. John’s Church at 11 A.M. Interment to follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery.
