Obituary for Clarence Edward Chandler Jr.
Clarence Edward Chandler, Jr, the first-born son of Clarence Edward Chandler Sr and Jency Dougherty, on November 14, 1925. He grew up in Atlanta, Georgia within the loving embrace of the Chandler family where he was raised by loving aunts Mary Louise Chandler, Ruth Chandler Reed, with the strong guidance of his Grandmother Alice Chandler, and Uncle James Chandler.
During his early years, childhood friends Bill Perry, John Buck, William Burrell, and Martin Luther King, Jr forged lifelong friendships that have endured the test of time; where their devotion is still present to this day. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, and was baptized by A. D. King. He graduated Booker T. Washington High School in the class of 1945. He was a member of the freshman class of 1945 at Morehouse College and transferred to Morris Brown College Majoring in Music. He was a singer; band member of the Red McAllister Band and the Atlanta Metropolitan Band; and even a band leader of his own band Known as The Sidewinders. He performed at many must see events at places like the Top Hat Club that later became The Royal Peacock, Georgia Tech, Georgia State, the V.F.W., the Purple Grata, the Poinciana, and others to include The Lincoln as well.
He was a devoted family man with a lifelong love of Music especially jazz. He was always the “Dapper Dan”, and fun loving. He married Betty Maddox Chandler, and had one son in that union Juan Chandler, and gained a step daughter Karla Rogers. Their marriage was a 46-year old “Love Affair”. He retired from an Offset Press Operator position at the Georgia Lung Association. He was still full of life and continued as an Offset Press Operator for the Purchasing Department of the City of Atlanta, and Prudential Bache Stock Brokers.
Once life slowed him down, we were blessed to have devoted caregivers, his brother Dr. Gene P. Chandler and friend Dr. Abraham L. Davis; Neighbors Robert McCleary and Franklin Dix, along with Jerry and Laurie Moore. They helped us tackle small mountains as needed. They are just like family as their efforts knew no boundaries in their assistance to us. Even Larry Schultz would often stop by to play the guitar and sing his favorite rhythm and blues songs that would remind him of his days Entertaining Atlanta. His cousin Felicia Harris showered him with love offerings weekly.
He was preceded in his journey by a loving Step-mother Willie Burke Chandler; sisters June “Sister” Chandler, and Carlin Chandler; brothers Stephen Chandler, Carl Jeffery Chandler, Sr, and Clay Chandler; son Clarence Edward Chandler II; grandson Torrienne Ahmad Hunt, and granddaughter Tristin Andrea Hunt.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Betty Maddox Chandler; loving stepmother Willie Marion Chandler; sisters Louise Weaver, and Diane Chandler; Brothers Dr. Gene Paul Chandler, and Major Michael Chandler,SR; children Sloan Weaver(Edward), Modestine Hunt(Andre), Portia Chandler, Karla Birt(Edward), and Juan Chandler; grandchildren Geneva Weaver, Edward “Lil Kim” Weaver, Surah Weaver, Elijah Weaver, Stephen Antonio Birt, Sidney Alexander Birt, Toussaint Hunt (Kera), Meredith Chandler, and Asa Chandler. Greatgrandchildren: Aisa Weaver and Saunders Hunt; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other family members, extended family members, and friends.
Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, November 10th, 2017, 11:00 am, at Greenwood Cemetery, 1173 Cascade Circle SW, Atlanta, Georgia 30311. Interment Greenwood Cemetery.
Public Viewing will be Thursday, November 9th, 2017, 10:00 am until 7:00 pm, at Herschel Thornton Mortuary, 3346 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW, Atlanta, Georgia 30331.
