Obituary for Dena Y. Powell

Dena Y. Powell
Dena Yvette Powell was the second of three children born to Yvette and Stephen Cumberbatch. She was born on October 4, 1979 and has two siblings: Omar Cumberbatch and Rohan Cumberbatch.
After graduating from Vahalla High School, Dena attended SUNY Albany and SUNY Purchase College. While working at the Greenburgh Public Library she met Kobie Powell and they were married on November 3, 2007. Dena, along with her husband were raising three children, Tytiona, Amari and Aleah. She was devoted to her family, even through illness in recent years.
In June 22, 2000 Dena accepted employment with the State of New York Unified Court System and remained there for 15 years. During her Court career she passed many difficult exams and was promoted several times until finally being appointed on March 20, 2008 as a Senior Court Clerk in Westchester County Family Court. Unfortunately, however, on March 26, 2015 Dena had to retire from that position due to health reasons.
Dena was beautiful, intelligent, hard working, a great mother and had several “hidden” talents. One of these was a musical ability to sing. She truly had a wonderful voice and loved many diverse musical genres. Contemporary to classical music, from Luther Vandross to Andrea Bocelli, who were two of her favorite male vocalists.
Dena’s other true passion and gift was her culinary skills. Cooking was one of her passions and she on more than one occasion mentioned a desire to one day attend Culinary school. Dena’s father would often remark to her that he would never be able to live with her because of the tremendous weight that would be gained due to her fabulously prepared meals. At family barbeques, in addition to bringing over sumptuous and fabulously prepared cuisines, Dena was also known for creating her very popular “blue” drink specials that were enjoyed by many of those in attendance.
Dena departed this life on Sunday, November 5, 2017. She is survived by her husband, Kobie Powell, her children Tytiona Elizabeth Coleman, Amari Powell and Aleah Powell, her parents Yvette and Stephen Cumberbatch, her brothers Omar Stephan Cumberbatch and Rohan Hubert-Allan Cumberbatch, sisters-in-law Jennifer and Abigail Cumberbatch, nieces Sienna and Ariella Cumberbatch, nephew Sebastian Cumberbatch, grandmother Olga Mahabeer, mother-in-law Idella Powell, father-in-law Larry Powell, numerous Aunts, Uncles, cousins, family and friends, too many to mention.

She will be missed greatly by all. Please celebrate her life, knowing that she is now in a better place and at peace.
