Obituary for Jeremiah J. Barry

Jeremiah J. Barry
Jeremiah J. Barry passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 10, 2017 at the age of 92. His eldest son Steven was at his bedside. Jeremiah was born on September 15, 1925 in Manhattan to Jeremiah W. Barry and Mary Barry (Forde) who had both emigrated from Ireland. He was raised in the Fordham section of the Bronx with his two brothers and graduated from All Hallows High School in 1943. Shortly after graduation he was drafted into the Marine Corps and assigned to the 2nd Marine Division as a radio operator achieving the rank of Corporal. During the voyage across the Pacific, the Marines were told they would be part of the force that would invade Japan and that most of them would not survive. Poised off the coast of Nagasaki for the invasion when the atomic bomb was dropped, they occupied the city after the surrender and witnessed the devastation first hand. After the war, he became a manager with the Schrafft’s restaurant chain which was eventually absorbed into Marriott. He managed restaurants in White Plains, Eastchester, New Rochelle and Manhattan; and was later food service director for high profile accounts including Chase Manhattan Bank headquarters, the New York Stock Exchange and Rockefeller University. He was proud of saying “Barry’s the name, and food is the game!” and thoroughly enjoyed his work.

It was while managing the Schrafft’s in White Plains that he met a young waitress from Northern Ireland named Sheila Coulter. They were married in 1960. Sheila passed away in 2002. Jeremiah is survived by his four sons; twins Steven (Heather) and Philip (Debbie), Mark and Jeremiah (Sandi). He is also survived by his grandchildren Adriana and Christopher (Philip), Charles (Steven), and Christopher and Daniella (Jeremiah). He was a resident of the Battle Hill neighborhood of White Plains, NY for over 50 years and recently had been living in the Hebrew Home at Riverdale.

Jeremiah J. Barry will be buried in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, NY alongside his mother and father on Saturday, November 18 following a funeral mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in White Plains, NY at 10am.
