Obituary for Dorothy Ellen Schonauer (Devereaux)

Dorothy Ellen Schonauer (Devereaux)
On Tuesday, November 14, 2017, Dorothy Ellen (Devereaux) Schonauer, finished her long journey in this world and passed on to eternal life with her Lord. Born January 9, 1912, in Newark, Ohio, Dorothy was the daughter of George Elliot and Mary Amanda (Haycook) Devereaux. She died just two months shy of her 106th birthday.

Dorothy married M.C. “Jack” Schonauer on September 11, 1935. The couple celebrated 52 years of marriage before Jack’s death in 1987. Together Jack and Dorothy were blessed with two children, seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Patricia Kay Sherman and her husband Roger of Fort Myers, FL; her daughter-in-law, Betty Schonauer of York; her grandchildren, Deborah Schonauer Bottjer and husband Greg of Chicago, IL, Kimberly Schonauer Ingersoll and husband Bradley of Blue Bell, PA, Amy Schonauer Golden and husband Steve of York, Robin Sherman Ecklin and husband Phillip of Fort Myers, FL, and T. David Schonauer and wife Jennifer of Philadelphia; and her great-grandchildren, Ryan Kimberly Bottjer, Samuel and Natalie Ingersoll, Sara and Alyson Golden, Rebecca and Jackson Schonauer, Zane Sherman, and Griffin Ecklin. In addition to her husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her son, Dr. Thomas Schonauer, longtime York Pediatrician, and her grandson, Matthew Kent Sherman.

All of her family will miss “GG” and her wonderful recitations of the Greek alphabet, her competitive games of Rummikub, her spot on singing of “In the Garden,” and her marvelous memory for family history. We are picturing a great family reunion going on right now!

A farewell service and interment of ashes in the Memorial Gardens of First Presbyterian Church in York will be private at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements by the Etzweiler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 1111 East Market Street, York, PA 17403.
