Obituary for Claudia Bugara

Claudia Bugara
Mrs. Claudia Bugara, aged 95, passed away at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on November 14, 2017 following a short illness.

Born in a village near Uman in central Ukraine in 1922, Claudia was taken away from her family at 18 years of age during WWII and sent to Germany along with many other Ukrainian girls her age to work. There she met her future husband Michael and immigrated to Canada along with their young daughter in 1952, first settling briefly in Quebec (Lac St-Jean area) and then in Port Arthur, Ontario. Claudia worked for years in the services area of Port Arthur General Hospital before retiring.

Claudia and her husband were active members of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Holy Protection and contributed to its construction and upkeep, with Michael using his carpentry skills and Claudia making Ukrainian dishes (e.g. pyrohy) for sale to raise money. They were also long-time members of the Port Arthur Prosvita. But what they loved the most was gardening: they kept a beautiful vegetable and fruit garden for 50 years and enjoyed an abundance of their own produce. Claudia continued to work in the garden into her 90s after severe macular degeneration took away her eyesight. Being the independent person that she was, Claudia lived in her own home until almost her 95th birthday.

One of the highlights of Claudia’s life was going at age 89 and legally blind to Ukraine with her daughter Mariam to visit her family in Uman as well as her husband’s family near Lviv for the first time in 71 years. She and Mariam were welcomed with open arms and treated to an unforgettable visit.

Claudia is survived by her daughter Mariam Adshead of Ottawa, son-in-law John and grandson Dan; she was especially proud of her grandson who is currently pursuing advanced studies in the United Kingdom. She also leaves behind relatives in Ukraine. She was predeceased by her husband Michael, her sister Vasylyna, nephew Dmytro and her parents.

Funeral services for Mrs. Claudia Bugara will be held on Friday, December 1, 2017, at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Holy Cross for a Funeral Liturgy at 10:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Stepan Didur. Interment will follow in the family plot in St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will begin from 5:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 30 in the chapel at Sargent Funeral Home, 21 Court St. N. Panachyda (prayers) will be offered at 6:30 p.m. If friends so desire, donations to the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Holy Cross would be appreciated.
