Sarah T. Garcia was born on August 1, 1942 to the parents of Teresa and Isabell aka “Shorty” Torres. She was preceded in death by her husband, Felipe Garcia, her father, two brothers, John Torres II, and Joe M. Torres, and two of her sons, Felipe Garcia Jr. and Leonard Garcia, who both passed as infants.
She is survived by her remaining three children: Steven E. Garcia, Shelly E. Garcia and Sebastian A.J. Garcia and a loving and respectful son-in-law, Owen M. Foster. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Christopher, Christina, Stephanie, Sam, Jasmine, Anthony and Zoey, three great-grandchildren: Joseph Daniel, Sophia Maria and one yet born, as well as her two sisters, Isabell Delhado and Christine Gonzalez, her mother and cousins too numerous to count.
Sarah was a spitfire of a teenage girl, doing what all girls do, dating boys and sometimes staying out too late. She loved to dance and once as a young girl, when her petticoats fell down, she simply kicked them off and kept on dancing.
Sarah met her husband when she was just a young girl of 16 and quickly set off on what surely seemed to her a life of adventure. They were married September 12, 1958. She moved into her in-laws home and was warmly embraced as part of the family and was often referred to as “Sarita” meaning princess, a term of endearment.
Felipe and Sarah’s adventures took them to California for a few months but they returned to Waco to visit. One such trip brought them home to Texas from California on a motorcycle with Sarah traveling in a side car. She told her sister, “It’s fun, you should try it!” Ultimately, they returned to Texas, and eventually moved to Dallas where they spent the rest of their lives.
As a young woman she worked to improve her education and took classes at a local college in Dallas. She steadily moved from position to position, company to company, always working to improve her life for herself and her family. She knew the importance of a good education and one of her proudest moments was watching her daughter graduate with an Associate’s Degree.
In fact, Sarah enjoyed learning throughout her life, visiting museums, attending the theater and enjoying art. She passed that love of culture and learning on to her daughter.
Sarah was a loving but firm mother. All her children can tell you that she undoubtedly believed in Proverbs 13:24: “Whoever spares the rod hates their children: but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.” As with most parents, when her grandchildren were born her heart softened. She even spoiled her furry four-legged grandbabies. She was proud and loved all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Without a doubt, she will be watching over them all.
Sarah was a beloved Daughter, Sister, Wife, Sister-in-Law, Mother, Mother-in-Law, Aunt, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and Friend. We are all saddened at her sudden passing.
To those who knew her best, you may hear her laughter now. We know Sarah would want you to smile when remembering her. Smile, laugh and dance because her family believes that’s exactly what she is doing with Felipe, now that they have been reunited.
