Obituary for Peter Shenas

Peter Shenas of San Diego, died peacefully on December 7, 2017 his family by his side, at the age of 87.

Peter was born on October 18,1930 in El Centro to his parents, Efstathios (Sam) and Coconeo Shenas. Raised in the “valley”, he played football at Central High School and was a member of the All Valley Team in both 1947 and 1948. While he ultimately graduated from San Diego State University with a business degree, his first two years of college were spent at the University of Southern California, on a football scholarship. He voluntarily gave up his deferment and was drafted into the US Army in February 1951, serving as a Lieutenant during the Korean War. Assigned to an anti-aircraft division in Mannheim Germany, he was discharged in November, 1953. Upon his return to San Diego, he married the love of his life, Mary Emmanuel Koutiscous the following month. As newlyweds, Peter completed his college education and went on to law school at UCLA, where he was a member of the Law Review, graduating in 1958.

Pete practiced law in San Diego for over 50 years. Together with his younger brother, George P. Shenas, he founded his own law firm and also practiced as a sole practitioner in his later years. He gave his time to the California State Bar Association, the Ahepa Organization - where he chaired the 41st Supreme Convention in San Diego in 1963 - and to the Boy’s Club during his career.

Most importantly, Pete was a loving husband to his wife Mary, for 56 years. Together, this devoted couple raised three children, Perry, Peter and Alexandra, and often shared that their family was the accomplishment of which they were the most proud. In fact, Peter would tell his kids that raising children is the “greatest thing you’ll ever do in your life”.

He is survived by his children, Perry Shenas, Peter (Celeste) Shenas, Alexandra Shenas, grandchildren, Riley, Christiana, Efstathios and Elana, and his sister, Anita Taylor of Spring Valley. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Shenas and his brother, George P. Shenas.
