Obituary for Melvin Wirth

Melvin Wirth
Melvin J. Wirth, 94, of Waukau, WI, passed away peacefully in his apartment at Oakwood Manor in Oshkosh on December 9, 2017, surrounded by his family. Melvin was born March 5, 1923, at his home near St. Joe, WI, to Bernard and Isabella (Knaus) Wirth. He was the ninth of fourteen children. He married Betty Bohn on September 3, 1951, at Saint Mary Catholic Church of Omro where their marriage of 66 years was recently celebrated with a blessing.

Melvin grew up on the family dairy farm. During his senior year at New Holstein High School, with the encouragement of his agriculture teacher, he entered an essay contest answering the question, “How is the war affecting your community?” His essay submission was awarded a full scholarship to attend the UW-Madison two-year Agriculture Short Course. Melvin served in the U.S. Army during the Occupation and Reconstruction of Japan, stationed on the Japanese island of Kyushu. Following military service, he worked as an animal husbandry technician. In 1955 he started work at Bohn Implement of Waukau and Berlin developing the Dairy Equipment business. He continued to sell, install and service dairy equipment until the time of his retirement.

Family and church were the most important things in Melvin’s life. He valued education and encouraged all his children and grandchildren to further their studies after high school. He was a dedicated member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Omro for over 68 years where he served as a trustee for many years, was on the building committee when Marion Hall and the classroom section was built, and served on the Parish Council. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #8810 in Winneconne. To people in the community he was known for his quick wit, storytelling, and sense of humor. Melvin and Betty enjoyed traveling the entire continental United States and abroad, often with friends.

Melvin is survived by his wife Betty and their four children, Kay (Kevin) Lovell of Wausau and their children Jaclyn (partner Geoff Morris) Lovell of Brooklyn, NY, Christopher (Jackie) Lovell of Mamoroneck, NY, and Anne (Kevin Ha) Lovell of St. Paul, MN; Cindy (Alan) Parker of Waunakee and their daughter Laura (Stephen) Fabick of Madison; Bill (Kathy) Wirth of Waukau and their sons Nathan (Laura) Wirth of Waukau, Matthew Wirth of Poygan, Lucas (Becca) Wirth of Omro, and David (Sara) Wirth of Cameron, NC; and Mary (Tom) Tully of Brookfield and their sons Ben Tully of Minneapolis, MN, and Jake (fiancé Connor Goggans) Tully of Milwaukee. Melvin was also blessed with three great-grandchildren, Leah and Kolby Wirth; and Frannie Fabick.

Melvin is further survived by two sisters, Laura Mae Goll of Sheboygan Falls and Marlene Klotz of New Holstein; a sister-in-law, Mary Wirth of Fond du Lac; and brothers and sisters-in-law Warren (Gloria) Bohn of Waukau, Loretta (Edson) Allen of Oak Park Heights, MN, Gloria (Michael) Smith of Oshkosh, and Douglas (Mary Ahonen) Bohn of Oshkosh. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by seven sisters, Evelyn (Arnold) Braun, Estella (William) Mueller, Lorraine (Ambrose) Wirtz, Alita (Ervin) Merten, Mildred (Tony) Brenner, Lillian Wirth, and Viola Wirth; four brothers, Br. Edwin Wirth SVD, Leo (Delores) Wirth, Lloyd Wirth and Delmer Wirth; two brothers-in-law, Kenneth Goll and Earl Klotz. Also preceding him in death were brother and sister-in-law Don and Dolores Bohn.
