Merlinda Trujillo Hernandez, age 75, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Monday December 18, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Born and raised in Las Cruces, NM, to Mariano and Genevieve Trujillo, Merlinda was the third of five siblings. She graduated from Las Cruces High School in 1960, and met the love of her life, Leo Hernandez, in 1964. They married in 1966 in Las Cruces, NM, and together had 3 children. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education in 1971 from New Mexico State University, and taught at Conlee Elementary for 29 years. She touched the lives of the students she taught and made lifelong friendships. Merlinda retired early to care for her mother and mother-in-law.
Merlinda loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was their greatest fan and shared many camping and travel adventures with them. Merlinda was a great mentor to her nieces and nephews, and she loved spending time at family gatherings. She was a parishioner of Our Lady Health Catholic Church for over 50 years. Merlinda was best known for her infectious smile, patience, humility, compassion, positive outlook, selflessness, and tireless care for family and friends.
Merlinda is survived by her loving husband Leo Hernandez of the family home, brother Henry Trujillo and wife Bea, brother Lee Trujillo and wife Rosella, sister Olga Newman, son Rommel Hernandez and significant other Jamie Molina, daughter Marianne Hernandez-Jimenez and husband Carlos Jimenez, Jody Hernandez-Belt and husband Lincoln Belt, and her grandchildren Savannah Jimenez, Ryenne Belt, Donovan Belt, Elijah Jimenez, Eliana Jimenez, nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was proceeded in death by her parents Mariano and Genevieve Trujillo, her brother Charlie Trujillo, her brother Fred “Lico” Madrid, her brother-in-law Bill Newman, and numerous aunts and uncles.
Visitation for Merlinda will begin at 5:00PM on Friday, December 22, 2017, followed by a Rosary at 7:00PM at Getz Funeral Home, 1410 E. Bowman Ave in Las Cruces. The funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Health Catholic Church, 1178 N. Mesquite St, Las Cruces, NM, at 10:00AM on Saturday December 23, 2017. A reception will follow at Our Lady of Health Parish Hall. Honorary Pall Bearers will be Carlos Jimenez, Gary Hernandez, Eric Trujillo, Mariano Trujillo, Paul Gamboa, and Charles Trujillo.
