Obituary for Norma Riddell Murphy

Norma Riddell Murphy, 90, a resident of Lake Forest, Illinois for 41 years passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones on December 20, 2017. Norma was born in Knightsville, Indiana to Ralph and Nellie (McMurray) Riddell on September 8, 1927. She is survived by her children: Graydon Murphy, Janet Murphy Ryan, David Murphy and Philip Murphy, 10 grandchildren and 2 Great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Sally Riddell and Helen Vanes. Norma was preceded in death by her parents, husband Edward (Ned), son Keith, sisters Marguerite Leachman and Gloria Raab, and brother Jack Riddell. Norma grew up in Brazil, Indiana where she developed a deep sense of family and faith that carried her through life. This is also where she met her true love and husband of over 50 years, Ned Murphy. While life may have moved her to other places, her heart and pride never left Indiana. Norma found her passion in the Fine Arts, served her community and church as a deacon at Frist Presbyterian Church, and developed a lifetime of family memories that include special trips to Fripp Island, South Carolina that reflected her love for the sea. Norma also found time for fun whether it was in a social setting like golfing with the “Nine Holers” at Inverness Country Club in Toledo, Ohio, or in a more intimate setting with fierce games of Pinochle between her and Ned. There will be two visitations and services to honor Norma’s deep ties to two communities: Lake Forest, IL – Visitation from 10:00 am until Noon on Tuesday, December 26, at Wenban Funeral Home, 320 Vine Ave, Lake Forest, IL followed by a service at 1:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church, 700 Sheridan Road, Lake Forest, IL. Brazil, IN – Visitation on Wednesday, December 27 from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Moore Funeral Home, 142 N Washington St, Brazil, IN, with services on Thursday, December 28 at 12:00 noon at First Presbyterian Church, 210 N Walnut Street, Brazil, IN. Burial will follow at Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Reelsville, IN. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to the Alzheimer’s Association, https://www.alz.org/.
