Obituary for Charles E. "Chub" Long

Charles J. Long, 82, of Huntley died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017 after battling cancer for six months. Born in Park Grove, MT on June 7, 1935 to Roy and Irna Long, “Chub” as he was known to everyone, grew up in Phillips County where he farmed his grandparents place north of Wagner until he married Carol Haser in 1966 and moved to Joliet after purchasing the Frontier Bar. They moved to Lockwood in 1975 and Huntley in 1988
Chub was a truck driver all his life. He started driving at age 16, hauling newspapers in Iowa before he came back to Montana to his grandparents’ farm. Even then, he drove truck for Ray Benson hauling cows and later for Dick Irvin. When he moved to Billings he worked for Rich Lehman and Prince Trucking before semi retiring and hauling sugar beets until the spring of 2017.
Chub enjoyed visiting about old times with everyone. He spent many a weekend going to auctions and to the flea markets and was always at the park auction. He restored old tractors for a hobby and spent many hours working on them.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, 3 kids, Vince and Andrea of Billings and Teena of WA; 5 grandkids and 7 great-grandkids. He was preceded in death his brother, Lee, a sister Maryann, and 2 children.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 5 at Smith Downtown Chapel. Condolences may be shared with the family at smithfuneralchapels.com.
