Obituary for Martha Jean Fitzgerald

Martha Jean Fitzgerald
Martha Jean (Guyton) Fitzgerald, age 94, of Brookville, PA passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, as a resident of Laurelbrooke Personal Care. Martha was born on December 25, 1923 to the late Alexander “Ike” and Margaret (Snyder) Guyton in Brookville, PA. She graduated from Brookville High School with the class of 1941. On November 20, 1942, Martha married George “Ray” Raymond Fitzgerald, and they shared 55 years of loving marriage until his passing on April 30, 1998. She worked at the G. C. Murphy Co. which was a variety store or five and dime. She worked at the TSA Truck Stop and at Sylvania in Brookville, PA. Martha was part of the Drum and Bugle Corp., with the American Legion, while she was in school. She was an avid swimmer and loved to ice skate. On trips to the casino she enjoyed playing the slots machines, she would find a machine that she wanted to play and spend the entire day at that machine. She also enjoyed playing lottery tickets. She loved to play bingo, and she would’ve played every night if she could. She was known to play up to 32 cards at a time! When Ray had his stroke in Feb. of 1993, all the extra activities stopped as she spent all her time with him until his passing in 1998. She loved when her grandchildren came to see her, it always brightened her day. Reading was something she loved especially newspapers and the Time, Smithsonian, and People magazines, which were her favorite. Her short-term memory recently started to slip, but she could still share memories from years ago, including naming every business on Main Street Brookville. “The Boss” is what she considered herself to be, which usually resulted in a grumpy-funny attitude that everyone loved. She had a strong love for animals including cats, dogs, and she even nursed a bird back to health. Martha was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star as well as the longest living member of the Brookville Presbyterian Church, where she attended services for over 80 years. Martha is survived by 3 sons; Raymond A. (Shelly) Fitzgerald, Gary L. (John) Fitzgerald, Robert E. (Georgi) Fitzgerald; 14 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Martha is preceded in death by 1 sister; Alice Smith; 2 brothers; Robert Guyton, John Guyton; and 2 sons; James and Mark Fitzgerald. Friends and family will be received on Friday, January 5, 2018 from 2 – 4pm and 6 – 8pm, at the McKinney – d’Argy Funeral Home, ltd, 345 Main Street, Brookville, PA 15825. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018, beginning at 11:00am, also at the funeral home and officiated by Reverend Nathan Royster. Interment will take place at St. John’s Cemetery (Windy Hill) Rose Twp., Jefferson Co., PA.
