Obituary for Gerard F Hunter

Gerard F  Hunter
Gerard (Gerry) F. Hunter, 81, of Lakewood, NJ, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2018, after a brief illness. He was born April 28, 1936, to Robert and Nora (Keenan) Hunter, in Brooklyn, NY, the middle of three children. He graduated from St. John’s University and was a loyal fan of the “Red Storm”.
Gerry served in the U.S. Army and later worked at Equity as an accountant where he met his future wife, Johanna Strapp. They moved to Manalapan, NJ, in 1965, where they raised their five daughters. Gerry began a long career at Transamerica in Trenton, NJ, retiring in 1998. During his time in Manalapan, Gerry was a very active member in the community. He was a founding member of the Yorktowne Social Club, serving as its first president. He was also instrumental in creating the Manalapan Soccer Club.
Gerry is predeceased by his parents, Robert and Nora Hunter, and his brother Robert Hunter, Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Johanna (Strapp) Hunter; his sister Barbara Hunter of Whiting, NJ; along with five daughters and their families; Mary DeFreitas (James) of Campbell Hall, NY; Noreen Sharkey (William) of Manalapan; Jeanne Petillo (Gavin) of Manasquan; Patricia Niro (Robert) of Manalapan; Nancy Hunter of Manalapan; and, 11 grandchildren Heather, Allison, Brenden, Justin, Kelly, Katelyn, Eric, Anthony, Emily, Carly and Jack.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Wednesday January 24, 2018 from 4-8 pm at Orender Family Home for Funerals 2643 Old Bridge Road Manasquan, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am at St. Mary of the Lake 43 Madison Avenue Lakewood, NJ 08701. Interment to follow at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent, NJ 07763. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Catholic Charities 4261 NJ 33 Tinton Falls, NJ 07753.
