Obituary for Pearl Beulah Fiander

Pearl Fiander
58, Head of St. Margaret’s Bay, departed this world on Sunday, January 28th, after a long and hard fought battle with many illnesses. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Mack and Blanche Fiander. She grew up in Head of St. Margaret’s Bay and was always a “Bay girl” at heart as this was her home. Although she left with many of the other young people from this community to travel west she eventually moved back to the area to be closer to family and friends. Pearl was a wonderful Aunt and loved when little ones came to visit. She would always brighten with a big smile when the children of her family and friends spent time with her. She had a career that spanned years in administrative roles until finally settling with the Provincial Government. First, in the Department of Tourism and finally in the Department of Labour. It was when she met her husband, Barry Tanner, seventeen years ago that Pearl finally learned what love truly was. After dating for ten years, Pearl and Barry married and recently celebrated their 7th wedding anniversary. As she had cared for others, Barry cared for her in her final stages of life. She exhibited in her actions faith, courage, independence, tenacity, loving care and absolute bravery in the face of the many challenges in her life. Although illness would be the final chapter of her life, most of her story was a tale filled with family and friends. Pearl had many dear friends and loved most of all laughing with them. She loved antiques, yard sales, road trips and Frenchies. She was a great cook and loved to bake. She took great pride in her home and she loved her dog Chance, who brought her so much love and comfort. Pearl was a loving wife; devoted daughter; caring sister; wonderful aunt; sweet surrogate grandmother; loyal friend and a beautiful person who left this world much too young. She is survived by her husband Barry and his two children, her sister Julianne Chaisson (Mike) Chester Basin, brother Ron Fiander (Debbie) Regina, SK; she was an aunt to ten and a great aunt to thirteen nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Hubert Fiander and his wife Julianne. Special thanks to the many VON nurses who cared for her as well as for the doctors and nurses in the ICU and IMCU units at the Halifax Infirmary. A special thank you for the many people who have been praying for Pearl. We take comfort in knowing that she is safe and finally well in the hands of her loving Heavenly Father. The body has been cremated and a graveside service will be held in the Spring date to be determined. In Lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Halifax Nova Scotia Down Syndrome Society for their Family Camp in memory of Pearl Fiander.
