Obituary for Richard J. Smith

Longtime resident, Richard J. Smith 87 died on February 1, 2018 at Grace Park in Stroudsburg, Pa. Dick married his wonderful wife, Loree (Fenwick) on May 26, 1951 at St. Matthews Church in East Stroudsburg, Pa. Loree passed away on Aug. 9, 2016 after she & Dick celebrated 65 years of marriage.

Dick was born in Scranton, Pa. the son of Fred and Mary (Driebe) Haddad who moved to Stroudsburg in 1930 and became Main St. merchants. Dick graduated from Stroudsburg High School in 1947 and attended Lafayette College where he studied Mechanical Engineering. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 1951 to Nov. 1953.

He began a career at Patterson-Kelly Co. in E. Stroudsburg in 1959 as an assistant engineer in the Heat Exchanger division. In, 1961 , he was appointed Sales Manager of the Pocono Fabricators division of P-K where de developed Formula G-8 Pre-Krete as acid resistant lining used to prevent various forms of corrosion. He became Vice President of Pocono Fabricators in 1970 after a major expansion of the business.

In 1973, Dick also became General Manager of the Process Equipment division of P-K responsible for the sale of mixers, dryers and granulators to various industries including pharmaceutical, food and plastics. He opened for P-K in Europe by setting up a test lab in Zurich and a joint company in Copenhagen. He set up sales agents for P-K all through Western Europe.

In 1982, he became Vice President, Sales & Marketing for all P-K product lines. In 1984, he founded a company in France who had developed a high efficiency gas fired hot water boiler. After negotiating the sale of the patent rights, he brought the boiler, now called Thermific, to East Stroudsburg where it became the fastest selling new product in the company history. After 37 years with the company, he retired in 1995.

Dick’s professional associations included the National Ass. of Corrosion Engineers, National Ass. of Power Engineers and the Process Equipment Manufactures Ass. Locally, he was a member of the Pocono Mt. Jaycees, Monroe County March of Dimes, Vice Chairman Stroudsburg Planning Commission, Monroe County Republican Party, the Elks Club and Eagles Club.

After retiring from P-K, Dick served on the Board of Trustees of the Eastern Monroe Public Library for 6 years, president for 2 years. He also served as Vice Chairman of the EMPL Foundation. Dick was an avid golfer and became a charter member of Great Bear Golf & Country Club in 1997. He was Chairman of the Golf Committee during the club’s inception. On August 27, 2004, he was lucky enough to score his only hole-in- one on the second hole at Great Bear. He and his wife were founding members of St. Luke’s Church in Stroudsburg, Pa.

He is survived by 3 sons: George E. Smith and wife Taylor of Amagansett, N.Y., Gregory C. Smith and wife Pam of Naperville, Il, and James J. Smith II and wife Vaska of E. Stroudsburg, Pa. and 5 grandchildren: Kathryn Mary Smith, Gregory C. Smith II and Elizabeth Smith all of Aurora, Il and Ronald Phillips of Nazareth and Josephine Smith Amagansett, N.Y.

A Mass of Christian burial will celebrated on Monday Feb. 5, 2018 at 11:30am from St. Luke’s Catholic Church 818 Main St. Stroudsburg, Pa. with Fr. Carmen Perry as celebrant. Burial will be in the Gates of Heaven section of Laurelwood Cemetery Stroudsburg, Pa. The family will receive friends on Monday Feb. 5, 2018 from10:30am until the time of the Mass at the church.
