Obituary for Robert E. "Bob" Long

Robert E. "Bob"  Long
Robert E. “Bob” Long, 83, of Hellam died on January 31, 2018 at M.S. Hershey Medical Center. He was the husband of the late Donna (Martin) Long. Born in York on December 14, 1934, he was the son of the late Harry M. and Alice (Quickel) Miller.

Bob worked for the York Dispatch for 44 years, retiring as the composing room manager in 1995.

He was a member of the York Masonic Lodge F & AM # 266, where he was a Past Master, the York Gethsemane, York Royal Arch Chapter No. 199, Past Thrice Illustrious Master of York Council No. 21, First Capital York Rite College No. 156, where he was treasurer since 2002, and received the Order of the Purple Cross in 2015.

Bob was also an active member at St. James Lutheran Church, Hellam, for 50 years, and the Hawks Gunning Club.

He was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis (MG) in 1998 and helped to establish a support group at M.S. Hershey Medical Center, in which he served as Vice President.

Surviving are three children, Timothy M. Long and his wife, Jeanne of Elizabethtown, Sharon S. Ilgenfritz and her husband, Bradley of York and Suzanne M. Williams and her husband, David of Ephrata; three grandchildren, Amanda Alloway, Blake Ilgenfritz, and Addison Williams; a step granddaughter Courtney Mann; four great grandchildren; one brother, Gary Long of VA, and two sisters, Lydia (Sue) Welles of NY and Martha Hornberger of Lewisburg.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church, 180 West Market Street, Hellam with Rev. Paul N. Frank officiating. A visitation will be held Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. A Masonic service will be held at 10:45 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. James Lutheran Church, 180 West Market Street, Hellam, PA 17406.
