The Real Angel

Bro.Ralph- as his church family called him- affectionately referred to many as "Angel". Though we were all graced with the same title, each of us felt special. You see, it didn't matter that it never varied, because when it was uttered by this gentle and soft-spoken man,"Angel" didn't seem generic. After many years of seeing Bro. Ralph serve as an usher at the front door and pick up countless kids for Sunday School, it occurred to me that I really did not know what he did for a living. To speak with Bro. Ralph, one would immediately realize that he is an intelligent man of few but carefully chosen words. It certainly didn't hurt that he also had a wonderful laugh that reinforced his sincerity. And so, I was intrigued by this particular mystery surrounding him. I asked someone to enlighten me. I listened. I was shocked! Bro. Ralph works at a funeral home?! How? How could this forever-smiling and pleasant man have such a grim job? The more I thought about it, the more I was tempted to feel confused and even a bit betrayed. After all, he could easily have been a preacher- a God-fearing man with a quiet wisdom and a nurturing heart. But then it occurred to me- who better than an angel to usher us into the presence of angels? From that day forward, I saw Bro. Ralph through new eyes and with a fresh appreciation for life and those who live it with joy and purpose. May Bro. Ralph's memory and example always burn brightly in every heart that he touched. Goodbye Bro. Ralph- our Angel!
