Meeting Mr. Craig
There is no part of me that would be able to continue my day without sharing the short time I had with Mr. Craig. I have met hundreds of thousands of people in my life and work and none have left the same mark as Mr. Craig. I met him early in Januarys, right after his birthday, when I came to visit Mrs. Craig, shortly before she passed away. We were talking to both of them to figure out what we could do an all I remember is our stone cold nurse looking up at me with a tear in her eye after Mr. Craig told us so genuinely how he loved and felt honored to care for his wife. I knew from that point on I would do what was in my power to make sure he had anything he needed, which if you know him, was never anything. He never ever asked me for a thing. Twice he mentioned to me that he was sad he never followed up and finished his high school diploma since he left for the navy at age 17. The second time he mentioned it I did a little research and with the help of Lorain County, and of course with the help of his wonderful son John, we were able to get him his high diploma. Lorain County was so touched and asked for a photo and I have never ever seen Mr. Craig smile so brightly. I am going to work hard this afternoon to find that picture again! I spent a lot of time sitting with him in the lazy boy, watching black and white movies and talking and laughing about everything! We would talking about sports, mostly about how terrible or wonderful our home teams were doing. He would tell me how he was a little trouble maker, as the youngest of 3 siblings and we would crack up about the funny things he did! On more serious days he would talk about the horrible things he saw floating in the Pacific Ocean, the funny things other sailors said, how many close calls he had at sea, how he was proud his three boys, his grandchildren and of course, how he missed the absolute love of his life, Ms. Betty. He would sometimes reach back for her at night, a year after she passed, and remember she was no longer on earth with him. I am so sad to hear of Mr. Craigs passing, but am very comforted to know that he is with Mrs. Craig and hopefully some of their funny little dachshunds that he also mentioned frequently. I am forever grateful for having met this incredible human and I know no matter how old I get, I will always remember him and what he has taught me. Rest In Peace Mr. Craig
