Obituary for Melvin Andrew Engeman

Melvin Andrew Engeman
Melvin (Mel) A. Engeman passed away at Fort Collins, Colorado, on February 11, 2018. He was born October 23, 1920, the son of Emma and Ben Engeman, in Fort Madison, Iowa. After high school, he was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad and later at the Rock Island (Illinois) Arsenal. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and graduated from pilot training in April 1944. A tour of duty followed, flying B-24’s in the Pacific during World War II. He left the Air Force Reserves in 1957 with the rank of Captain. Mel was a member of the 11th Bomb Group Association.

Following his return from active duty, he enrolled at the University of Iowa and graduated in August 1948. He remained with the university on the business staff of the university hospitals. It was there he met E. Marie Glatt, RN. They were married in 1950. In 1952 the family moved to Denver where Mel began his career as a life insurance actuary that spanned over 48 years, from Actuarial Student to President. He was a member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA).

E. Marie Engeman passed away in December 1998 and in 1999 Mel moved to Loveland, Colorado. He subsequently married Sally Kelly in 2000. Sally passed away in 2014.

Mel’s final retirement began December 31, 2000, past his 80th birthday. He continued being active with various volunteer projects. His favorite was the time spent (8 years) as an assistant in an algebra class at Ferguson High School. While he was four times as old as the students, his association with them was well received.

Over the years, Mel continued his interest in flying, taking lessons in an ultra-light, glider, sport plane, Cirrus and others. In 2013, he flew a B-24 again, after over 67 years since the last flight. He was fortunate to be able to share that flight with his 2 sons.

He and Marie traveled a great deal. After he married Sally, traveling continued including one trip around the world. He visited every continent except Antarctica.

Mel is survived by his sons Rick (Carrie) of Fort Collins and Steve (Cheryle) of Loveland, grandchildren Alexander, Kaitlyn and Isabel, step-grandchildren Nate and Emily, and one great grandchild Rose Marie and a step-great-grandchild Atticus. His sister and 3 brothers pre-deceased him.

Services will be at All Saints Episcopal Church in Loveland (3448 N Taft Ave, 80538) on February 24th at 11:00am.

In lieu of flowers, contributions should be directed to Bird World, Denver Zoological Foundation, C/O Northern Colorado Crematory, 700 8th Street, Greeley, CO 80631.
