Margaret Peacock Steele, 99, of Mineola, Texas passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at her home.
She was born on April 5, 1918 in Hawkins, Texas to C.A. (Gus) and Ella Black Peacock. She graduated from Mineola High School in 1935 and from North Texas State Teachers College (now the University of North Texas) in 1939.
After graduation, she taught Home Economics in Palmer, Texas for two years and returned to Mineola to work for her father as a “lease hound” in the early oil boom in East Texas. She married Merwin M. Steele in 1947 and lived in Denison, Texas where they had three daughters. They moved to Dallas in 1951 then to Longview, Texas in 1958. She worked as a professional in Camp Fire Girls and was very involved with her church. Margaret and her husband raised cattle in Mineola and split their time from 1964 until 1990 between Longview and Mineola. Following the death of her husband, she moved home to Mineola in 1991 to live on her land and raise cattle. She was very proud of her participation in the annual Mineola Hay Show where she twice won second place. She loved mowing pasture and rounding up calves for auction.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings Roy Peacock, Virgil Peacock, Mildred Peacock Peppeard, Mary Peacock Simms and Dan Peacock. She is survived by her daughter Lou Steele and husband Frank Taylor of Mineola, daughter Jane Steele Curtis of Rincon, Georgia and daughter Ann Steele Alotto of Mineola, grandchildren Regina Alotto Dickerson (husband Kevin), Rick Alotto, , Susan Curtis Abao (husband Warren), and “adopted grandchildren” Eric and Nicole all of Georgia, Michael Curtis (wife Elaine) of Flower Mound, and Ray Taylor (wife Lesley) of Scotland. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren and many special nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Thursday, February 22 at 10:00 a.m. at Beaty Funeral Home, Mineola with Reverend Mark Neeley officiating. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Pallbearers are Mike Simms, David Simms, Lee Simms, Brett Nelson, Jim Pearce and Lane Vanderslice. Honorary pallbearers are Wayne Collins, Robert Peppeard, Gary Peacock and Don Rhodes, Dr. Tim Vanderslice.
