Obituary for Eugene "Gene" Alexander Mitchell

With heavy hearts, the family of Gene Mitchell announce his passing on March 5, 2018 at the Sturgeon Community Hospital at the age of 86 years.
Gene will be loved always by his wife of 63 years, Maxine; son, Kelly (Brenda); daughter, Darlene Jones; grandchildren, Jason, Jill McDonald (Chris), Jessica Jones, Amanda Jones and Justin Surgenor; and great-grandchildren, Jakob, Joel , Felix and Brynn. Predeceased by his daughter, Debbie Mitchell; and son, Bill Mitchell.
Gene was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved travelling, fishing, curling, camping and get-togethers with family and friends.
Gene’s social conscience led him to his life’s work in the labour movement in Alberta from 1957 in his local union to his retirement in 1994.

“For Joe Hill and Cesar Chavez who fought in their own time,
For our Brothers and our Sisters up and down that picket line,
For the unnamed and unnumbered who struggle brave and long,
For the Union men and women standing up and standing strong.”

- Union Song, The Night Watchman

A Celebration of Gene’s Life will be held Saturday, March 10 at 12:30 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 – 111 Avenue, Edmonton. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
