Obituary for Joseph Anthony Devoe

Joseph Anthony Devoe
“Pa Joe”

Please join us in celebrating the life of Joseph Anthony DeVoe, age 62, who passed away in Charlotte, NC on March 3rd, 2018. Joe is survived by his sister Francine Sciacca of Port Charlotte, FL, his brother Jeff DeVoe of Lakeland, FL; his brother David DeVoe of Davidson, NC; his half-brother Mike DeVoe of Mastic Beach, NY; his former spouse, Marlene Allingham; his son and daughter in-law, Joseph and Andrea DeVoe of Charlotte, NC; and his granddaughter, Lillian DeVoe. Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Jean Bianco; his brother, Kevin DeVoe; and his brother, Chris DeVoe.
Joe was one of seven children born to the late Dorothy Winkler and raised in various towns in the Long Island suburbs. Joe honorably served his country by enlisting in the United States Coast Guard and working aboard the USCGC Point Herron cutter. He was known for his hard work and dependability as a plumber at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY and as a tradesman for many Long Island communities. For most of his adult life, Joe lived in Ronkonkoma and Mastic, NY until he moved to Charlotte, NC later in life to be close to his son.
Throughout his life, Joe was always playing competitive games like chess, volleyball, softball, cards, and billiards; and was known by many friends as “9 Ball Joe”. Joe had a passion for writing poetry and be it a close friend, family member, telemarketer, or anyone else, he loved to share his poetry with everyone who crossed his path. Joe’s special place was in San Ignacio, Belize, where he enjoyed the culture and spending time with close friends he made there. He had a generous heart for helping people, sometimes to his own detriment, but it never, ever, stopped him. Joe was a proud father who loved his family and adored his granddaughter Lilly who calls him, “Pa Joe”. His legacy of love and compassion will be remembered by all who knew him.

Joe’s family and friends are invited to attend his visitation at Gaskin Funeral Home [14617 Lawyers Road, Matthews, NC] from 10:00 am to 12:00pm and burial service later at 2:00pm at Sharon Memorial Park [5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC]. In memory of Joe’s favorite charity, please send donations to Saint Jude’s Children’s Home in lieu of flowers.
