Obituary for Joseph Henry Lewis

Joseph Henry Lewis
Joseph Henry Lewis, longtime resident of Eastpointe, died peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on March 9, 2018. He was 87 years of age.

Joseph was born on September 25, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan, the oldest son of Basil and Rosalyn (Godbold) Lewis. At the age of 18, he joined the U.S. Army and served our country honorably for two years. Shortly after his time in the service, he met a woman, Helen Louise, and they fell in love and married on June 20, 1953 at St. Peter Lutheran Church. The couple made their home in Eastpointe and was blessed with eight beautiful children of whom they loved and cherished. Joseph started working with his father during his early years at his Standard Service Station in Detroit. He made a career with General Motors / Gear and Axle for 20 years; and after retirement went to work at Checkers and was known for his wonderful french fries that were cooked to perfection. Joseph was a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Eastpointe post 2495. He enjoyed bowling, drawing and playing cards. Joseph loved a good cup of coffee and enjoyed snuggling with his toy poodles. He also enjoyed the great outdoors. Joseph was a man of faith who put his family first and made sure they were well provided for. He will be deeply missed and his light will continue to shine in our hearts forever.

Joseph is the loving husband of the late Helen; dearest father of Cindy (the late Richard) Morian, JoAnn (Bruce) Carter, Michael (Jackie) Lewis, David (Rosa) Lewis, Kathy (Jim Durack) O'Grady, Jeff (Dawn) Lewis, Bobby Lewis and Jim (Karen) Lewis; cherished grandfather of Traci (Joseph), Jessica, Brian (Jacqueline), Sarah (Drew), Amanda, Chelsea, Heather (Bobby), Eric, Charlotte, Anthony (Juliana), Matthew, Christine, Tiffani, Brittany, Valerie, Michael and the late Ashley; beloved great grandfather of Austin, Julia, Alyssa, Melanie, Ethan, Lily, Tyler, Jordan, Avery, Piper, Dakota, Alexis, Preston, Emily, Madison, Raymond, Ella, Natalie and Amelia; dearest brother of William (Lois) and the late Basil (Linda) Lewis; and beloved uncle of many nieces and nephews.
