Condolence: Mary was a wonderful and special person who I got to know through our work as co-investigators on clinical trials for XLH. Though I did not know Mary well, it was clear that she had that warmth and love for others that truly special people have. I and all of her professional colleagues will dearly miss her. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

Condolence: My heart aches for her family, friends, and staff. I loved her as my doctor. She was always smiling and there wasn't a question I would ask that she couldn't answer. She will make Heaven a better place. "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." ~ Psalm 147:3

Condolence: I was very sad yesterday when I learned the news of Dr. Ruppe's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and all who will miss her very dearly. Those of us who have XLH and called her our doctor were truly blessed to have such a knowledgeable, compassionate, and enthusiastic advocate managing our treatment and working tirelessly to find new ways to make our lives better. She impacted so many people's lives in a positive way. An appointment with her felt like a chance to catch up with a good friend who always had something new and exciting to share with you. I always looked forward to my next appointment. Her passing is a loss for all of us, but we're all better for having known her.

Condolence: Mary and I were residents at Georgetown together and both went on to Hopkins to train in Endocrinology. We were the only two fellows in our year. Over the 6 years of Internal Medicine/Endocrinology training, I got to know Mary well. We supported each other and helped each other as we became doctors and researchers. As we spent many hours together during that time, I have numerous memories of Mary’s humor, kindness, dedication, intelligence, and diligence. One memory sticks out above the many others. We were in clinic together during our first year of fellowship. My father had been getting treatment at Hopkins for lung cancer and that morning he was getting routine imaging as well as an evaluation for some transient visual complaints. I got the call while we were in clinic that his head CT showed multiple brain metastases. I went out to the stairwell to collect my thoughts and shed a tear. A few minutes later, Mary came to check on me and insisted that I take the rest of the day off to be with him. She would handle all of my responsibilities.

Mary had a big heart and was a great friend. She took superb care of her patients, treating them as if they were her family. She was a great researcher and delighted in the intricacies of bone biology. It was no surprise that after our training at Hopkins, she would go on to have a distinguished academic career. She did it with characteristic modesty and always with a smile. Farewell Mary. Your Hopkins family will miss you.
